I really expected this to be bad but was quite presently surprised. This rum is pretty average with a little burn but no off notes. I think Tanduay Dark fits the bill of what most people would think of as a mixing rum. Not a sipper and nothing particularly exciting, but there are no off notes with this rum.
I believe it must have added sugar but I would swap this for any cocktail I generally use Plantation 5 year, and would probably work just fine.
This Rum is a spicy dark Rum with an amber colour. At first the rum tastes very peppery with a smooth and soft sweet aftertaste. Tanduay Dark is a beautiful dark Rum that stands out in a Rum & Coke or even better Rum & Tastings Gingerale, but can also be enjoyed on the rocks.
I could not believe that this $ 5,- rum (in Philippines) is this good!
After a long day of backpacking accros the sugarcane fields of the Philippines, sit on the beach, crack open a fresh coconut and pour some Tanduay in it... trust me, it feels like heaven!
I was fortunate enough to get an opportunity to visit the Philippines. While there, I spent my time in the central islands away from the bustle of Manila. As stated by other reviewers, Tanduay Rum is super cheap on the islands and was the go-to liquor for locals. Tanduay Dark, which has a strange hue of reddish orange, is definitely not a smooth sipper. It has a sweetish ethanol smell and could be described as an alcohol flavored rum. Quite harsh all around with a glimmer of sweetness trying to escape the flames of gasoline. The locals created some interesting "cocktails" to cover the burn. One variation that I found enjoyable and memorable was called "Reggae Reggae", a mixture of Nestea Powdered Iced Tea, Calamondin juice (small limes found in Southeast Asia) and an overly generous amount of Tanduay Dark. Although not a top shelf rum, Tanduay will always remind me of that great time when I almost died in the Philippines.
Ordered a drink at a Phillipine hostel and the rum was only sold per bottle. For the price it was good, we ended up buying a couple more bottles.
Was sitting in a friends cabinet for a few years. Alcohol bite immediately. Not a sipper.
By itself it has a harsh alcohol taste to it, but it makes for a good mixer and is very, very cheap.
This version is Tanduay is their 'basic' rum...a 750ml bottle locally in the Philippines costs less than $2...hence, everyone drinks it....locals prefer to sip and chase with Coke...not a connoiseur's dream as its 80Proof will only let you have so much before your body signals warnings...nonetheless, a classic rum in its own right...
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

The thing that makes this hard to drink or even compare to most of the rums people are comparing it to is Tanduay Dark is rhum agricole, meaning it is made from cane juice not molasses. This leaves it with the orange color and funky taste so many people talk about. Love it or hate it, when you are in the Philippines you don't have much choice. Tanduay sells for around P100 for a fifth or about $2.00 An adulterated bottle of Bacardi or Captain Morgan runs about $18 to $25 with unadulterated well over $50.
While Tanduay does have some premium rums and rhum agricole most places don't carry them. It does't matter though. get a bag of calamansi or just a bottle of juice, a fresh cut coconut to enjoy it out of, and you will have spent less than $5 for a great time.
