Philippines | Aged | 40% ABV
Don Papa Small Batch Rum is produced by the Bleeding Heart Rum Company on the southern island of Negros in the Philippines. The rum is distilled from molasses, then aged for over 7 years in American oak barrels, and lastly charcoal filtered.
The name Don Papa rum was inspired by Papa Isio, a leader of the Philippine revolution against the Spanish who led his island to independence before joining the main revolutionary movement.

Neat tasting awful, in cocktails not drinkable. Totally overpriced
I knew going into this that this is a sweet rum... And it is a SWEET rum, but what completely ambushed me, is the artificial aroma... I can take sweet rums, they are not my favourite... but this is completely another level, it is sweet and extremely artificial.
De 3e rum tijdens ons Lama avondje. Maar een 5,7 voor deze rum, ik vind hem erg lekker en zacht
Ce n'est pas un rhum pour moi... C'est une liqueur...
Syntetisk, alt for sød i både smag og duft. Bestemt ikke min farvorit.
Taste of vanilla and citrus notes.
Not bad to drink but not a real rum : an artifical rum.
I tried the Don Papa 10 year rum and I really enjoyed it. Now I'm reviewing the regular Don Papa.
This has a somewhat similar flavor profile, though I do prefer the 10 year, as the aging makes it more sophisticated.
Has an artificial taste (flavoring has been added), but I find it rather good. Smells and tastes of sweet candied fruits, spice, vanilla, honey, and a hint of orange. A pretty good rum if you have a sweet tooth like me. :-)
"The best damn rum that I've ever tasted..."

Smells a lot like a vanilla and lemonade ice cream float.
"For all its sweet sugariness, its really very drying and bitter on the palate once it all settles down."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

I've looked at Don Papa for a long long time, as I think that the packaging as A+.
Coming on here (after I bought the bottle) I should have been a little more circumspect. Rarely has a rum scored right across the spectrum like this.
The nose - too sweet
The palate - too sweet
Overall - too sweet
However.....while it is far too sweet, and I suspect the addition of sugar and many other things, there is something about it that is the tiniest bit appealing. It is more appealing if you don't treat it as a rum, but more a liqueur, and does have a sophistication about it that many overly sweet rums miss out. It's strange, but while I dislike Pyrat XO, this is OK (just) but really, there isn't too much difference in the approach they take. I wonder whether giving it 4 is being overly generous {EDIT - yes it is. It is a disgusting rum so I have moved down to 1}, but maybe as it is the first rum from the Philippines that I have had, I have given it the benefit of the doubt (and it is beautifully packaged).
Easy enough to drink, but I won't be buying again. I think I might have to pull this out and drink with my Christmas pudding.
EDIT - I have revisited this bottle (I still find it hard to call it a rum) and while I still don't really like it, if you consider it not as a rum, but as a fruit bomb and a whore at that, it has a certain appeal. I think it very much depends on the mood you are in. BUT it is far too expensive.
