I was in charge of Mai Tais the other night for a friend's party and thought I'd try something different than my usual go to for parties... Denizen Merchant's Reserve.
The Royal Jamaican has kind of generic presentation with the bottle and label. It kind of looks like someone didn't put a lot of thought into it. The 12 year old boast on the label, along with "Pot still", and the reasonable price, made me buy it.
The rum's 12 years old and 40% ABV so I expected mellow. The nose is nice with just a whiff of varnish and then it quickly goes to a kind of banana bread thing with ripe fruits and bananas... but aged. There's not much of any Jamaican pot still funk to speak of. The color is a nice deep amber.
First taste impression is rich and balanced. This is a well made rum. Initial taste is a brown sugary, rich/woody kind of hints of the bourbon cask and again, ripe bananas (but not a lot of that)... balanced. Not much bite or forwardness to it. It's definitely been spending time in a bourbon cask. There a little of that on the palate and it's a nice balance for the sugary spices.
I made a Mai Tai with it using the basic T.V. recipe. Man, was I impressed. This is my new "Everyday/party Mai Tai" rum. Absolutely wonderful in that drink. If this stuff was 50% ABV... (as mentioned in another review) it might be the missing link between Wray and Nephew's unobtanium 17 year old of yesterday and modern rums of today. If they would bottle this stuff at 50% ABV this would be the perfect Mai Tai rum and I'd never have to buy another bottle of Hampden again.
I was really impressed with this rum. Highly recommended!
100% pot-still rum from Monymusk, aged on-pemise. 40% ABV.
N: Fruits, fusel oils, rubber, glue, bike chains. So a bit like a Caroni, but much fruitier and less dry. A note of cherry that I usually don’t care for (typically in aged agricoles) but here the note plays well with all the others. Not much “hogo,” so to speak, but still super interesting!
The palate is complex—woody, fruity, nutty, bitter. With the bitter notes (on both the nose and palate), it seems even older than its 12 years.
The finish is medium, fading too soon due to its relatively weak strength. Which is my major complaint. 43% would be nice, 50% would be heavenly. Even at a paltry 40, it was a good deal at K&L that totally flew under the radar. I really hope they bring it back! It's a nice sip, and makes a killer Mai Tai.* Definitely would buy again.

*One could make a convincing argument that this is the closest thing reasonably available to the venerated W&N 17, in terms of flavor profile. 100% pot distilled in Jamaica, aged there, woody and nutty. From the horse's mouth: "surprisingly golden in color, medium bodied, but with the rich pungent flavor particular to the Jamaican blends." Why not?
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

I actually enjoy the Royal Jamaican Rums. So I thought I'd try their 'premium' 12 year aged rum (I put 'premium' in quotes as it only costs $29.99 at K&L Wines, 2018).
I tried it next to their gold rum, which is a pretty decent gold rum, and I struggled to determine which I liked better. Ultimately, I think I prefer their gold (though it was very close).
Smells and tastes of oak, spice, molasses, burnt sugar, and a hint of chocolate. I prefer the gold, as it has a nice hint of butterscotch to it.
Not bad, but not quite as good as I had hoped.
