Almonds, lime zest and spices? What doesn't scream tiki? A great mixer for cocktails, not over powering like many cordials get to be. Just real workable.
Falernum is a must in many tiki drinks and even though the very best and most vibrantly flavored falernum is homemade, this one is a good option.
If you're a fan of Beachbum Berry (download his app right now!), you'll be using Falernum in your Tiki cocktails with regularity. This is one of the best commercially made versions. I've tried Fee Bros. and it's nasty, but there are others. I'm guessing that you won't go wrong with Taylor's.
Not even close to the homemade version. Far too sweet which overpowers the spices, which were barely apparent. If you need a Falernum for your mixed tiki drinks, go with "Bitter Truth Golden Falernum". More expensive but a bottle goes a long way due to its amazing flavor, which is very close to home made.

This isn't a rum! However, it is an essential ingredient in Corn N' Oil which is what I bought it for. For that alone, it's probably a good addition to any collection. I should really try using it for more drinks! Even in Barbados this seems to be something of a niche bottle, in the UK you'll be lucky to find it any way other than mail order.
I'm really not sure how to rate this because it's not really a rum but a liqueur. However, it's an invaluable mixer for tiki drinks so it's definitely very important in everyone's bar arsenal. Look at any tiki receipe worth it's weight from the likes of people in the know like Beachbum Berry or Martin Cate of Smuggler's Cove and you'll see countless recipes calling for Velvet Falernum and this one is the one mentioned most when you don't have the time or desire to make your own. Own it's own as a sipper it's way too sweet but works great as a mixer.
People who complain about this falernum don't understand what falernum is. Don't talk to me about your internet-obtained recipes, this is what is sold and drunk on Barbados. It's what falernum is. This version is a bit lighter on the spice than some, and not as rich in flavor, but definitely works as it should.
What else can be said that most haven't already.
This isn't *really* a rum, but it needs to be in your cabinet. It's very sweet, and could be used as a more flavorful version of simple syrup.
My favorite way to use falernum isn't in a traditional tiki cocktail, but in the Chartreuse Swizzle. It sounds like a simple cocktail but it's absolutely fantastic. Had this as a mixer at the distillery. It added great flavor. Hard to find near PA. Found an online site that sells it. I also found a Total Wine and Spirits in Cherry Hill, NJ that carries it.
