Guatemala | Aged | 40% ABV | Column Still (1-4)

Ron Zacapa 23 Solera Rum was created in 1976 in the highlands of Guatemala, where it is distilled in a copper-lined column still from fresh cane juice before solera aging.

The 500 year-old Spanish Sistema Solera method is used to age Ron Zacapa 23 in white oak casks. This results in a combination of rums aged between 6 and 23 years.

The current Ron Zacapa 23 bottle features a woven band around the middle, which is in reference to the original hand woven palm leaf petate bottle cover that covered the bottle.

I see no glimmer of hope. Overly sweet and confected, I picked up a bottle in Duty Free about 3 years ago and I still haven't finished the bottle. The strangest thing about it, is that I bought another bottle while passing through at a later date!! I have really tried to like it, but find no redeeming features at all and as it says, "serious improvement needed".

EDIT - the more I drink it the better it gets. But still nowhere near the average that people have given and ultimately I won't be buying this one again.

Sweetened, not a true rum. If you like sweet liqueur you'll definitely like this one. 23 yo solera mix, well you can believe it, if you want to.

Für Süßstoff ganz nett. Nase war gut, Gaumen zu süß. Eigentlich ähnlich wie beim Plantation 20th Anni, nur mit etwas anderen Aromen. Einen direkten Vergleich hatte ich jedoch nicht.

Short review on this which is apt as this rum has short flavour, it doesn't last or carry forward in the mouth, short finish. Cant see why you would buy this over El Dorado 12 which this in such a different class. I only drink this if in a bar and this is the best offering.

First time I have seen this at our ABC store so thought I would try it instead of my normal Bacoo 12 year. Nice brown color floral nose of carmel, very smooth. Not sure what all the other reviewers are complaining about too much sugar. It is sweet yes but not too sweet and closer to a whiskey than a sweet rum. Bacoo 12 has more caramel taste and Dos Maderas 5+5 has more of a sweeter sherry/molasses taste. The more you sip the Solera the more you notice the rum taste. While typing and sipping I changed my rating from a seven to an eight. Definitely worth a try. EDIT - second drink this is definitely sweet - too sweet. It tastes like sugar not like an aged Carmel. Cutting my rating back to seven. Second EDIT - after trying to finish the bottle I bought I am knocking my rating down to 4. Every time I pour another I like it less and less.

23 g of added sugar per litre and a very young rum with lots of caramel. Totally uninteresting and highly overrated.

It's a typical sweet rum. Should probably be considered a rum liqueor. I know some people enjoy very sweet rums - if you're one of them, maybe give it a try. I have to rate this low, though, it's just not for me.

One of the worsted rum, high price and taste is somewhere in the bottom, 4/10 only for color and smell

I was looking forward to this rum because of its general popularity. I didn't like sipping it. Smells nice but the taste is harsh and I can't get myself over that sharp alcoholic taste. Tastes really cheap. I would be able to choose a far better rum from cheaper categories.
