Bacardi Black rum

Bacardi Black

United States | Dark | 40% ABV

Originally named Bacardi Black, this rum is now called Bacardi Select. The recipe is the same, which consists of a blend of aged rums, charcoal-filtered once before resting for at least 4 years in American White Oak.

Due to my enjoyment of CM Dark I thought I'd give this not dissimilar product a go. Why not? It was pretty cheap; how bad can it be? Uh yeah... kinda wish I'd picked up something else. Let me be honest though; I don't totally hate it although there's barely any kinda flavour in it at all and it's got that weird petrochemical quality that a lot of Bacardi products seem to have. Indeed, it reminded me of the cheap voddy that my wife sometimes uses and that I wouldn't consume if it was the last liquid left on Earth. Furthermore they add insult to injury by audaciously putting the words 'Superior Black Rum' on the label (it's probably superior to Methanol). So in conclusion this might work okay in a cocktail but neat or as a sipper it'd need a LOT of help. Good colour though, and it was worth a try if only for the sake of providing my palate more experience.

In Comparation with Bacardi Reserva 8y, this was big step down. If you fist sniff that you smell straight alcohol, and if you sipp for first time, yea straight alcohol, after few seconds the some RUM tones appears but
immediately disolve in that alcohol aftertaste. it´s bitter and almost teste artifical.

Nice amber color. Nice trails on the glass.
Taste is like medicine. Not suitable for sipping.
Surprisingly found this at home (probably a gift?) and somebody even drank from it. Lol

Я не знаю, что надо сделать, чтобы так испортить спирты из сахарного тростника. Ни в коем случае не берите этот ром.

Tasted at Laka Lono on 1/3/22. Pours a dark reddish amber (not black). Musky aroma. Caramels. Has a nice mild toffee sweetness. Slightly leathery. This is way better than I would ever have imagined.

The nose mostly buttery/butterscotch. Sipping it, I get a big alcohol punch up front that overwhelms any of the more subtle rum flavors that it might have. It was an interesting and inexpensive bit of education that helped me understand some of the more complex rums that followed in my home tasting.

Bacardi Black has that taste of pure alcohol, despite being only 40%. While it does still keep those notes of molasses, the alcohol completely overwhelms the taste unlike any rum I've ever had before. After trying only about a dozen different rums, this is the only one I can say I genuinely do not like straight. It's drinkable, even without being drunk first, but not good.

I felt it was in the same vein as a Bacardi Gold. Perhaps a little fuller bodied. Only to be used as a mixer and not neat or over ice. I prefer to mix with Bacardi Gold before the Bacardi Black.
