Bacardi Black rum

Bacardi Black

United States | Dark | 40% ABV

Originally named Bacardi Black, this rum is now called Bacardi Select. The recipe is the same, which consists of a blend of aged rums, charcoal-filtered once before resting for at least 4 years in American White Oak.

Do yourself a favor and give this one a hard pass. If you don't want to read the whole review, in short "YUK!" and "Let me wipe this off my tongue using a flame thrower".

I got this because my local store was out of my usual (Flor De Cana 12 or 18 yr). Some bachelorette party had come in and cleaned them out of most of the good stuff. The Bacardi was one of the few dark rums left. I said to myself "It's Bacardi. How bad could it be?" Their clear rum isn't horrible, if a bit bland for my taste. That was my first mistake. My second was pouring some in glass and taking a big sniff. Fortunately, the sniff made me cautious before attempting to taste it. I spit it back out.

NyQuil Green tastes better. Jägermeister tastes better. So is Gammel Dansk and Fernet Branca. This particular rum is right up there with the roasted (aka kinda burnt), salted Dutch licorice on the scale of truly disgusting. If you've ever had it, you know what I mean. I have a sneaking suspicion that the Dutch tell children that this is candy to keep them from wanting stuff like Nerds and Skittles but that's another story. I even tried baking with it and it ruined an entire batch of rum cake cupcakes. The nasty chemical/medicinal funk doesn't cook out and there's not a spice combo I can find that covers it up. I thought I'd try it with some coconut, lime and pineapple. Still nope. Just ruined some perfectly good coconut milk and fruit. It's so bad that I won't even consider giving it away to get rid of it since I don't know anyone that I dislike that much. It's going down the toilet, where pee belongs. That, by the way, might actually taste better.

I have had rums that I didnt like, and reviewed them at 4 or 5 because I could see how others may enjoy them. This however, was almost offensive to me. I can preface by saying I LOVE Kraken Black rum. So when this showed up on my shelf after my partner went and picked up some bottles for the bar, I had to give it a go. I cant really explain what it tasted like, all I know was that it was really bad. It wasnt like anything I had ever tasted from a rum bottle (and thats a lot of rum bottles). If you are looking for something dark or spiced around that price point, do yourself the favor and go Bacardi Spiced. A far superior option to whatever this is. I will probably never find another rum that I will review at 1 star, but this one really baffles me with its existence. Somebody tasted that and approved it. I will never know how.

A solid dark rum and a particularly solid Bacardi rum. It tastes like there is some sugar, but it does not take over the character of the spirit. The charred barrel aging adds a rich flavor profile that will put a pep into your cocktail's step. Bacardi Black has a pleasant aroma, and it seems less harsh than many of its Bacardi siblings at the same price point. It goes excellently in a cola, although I have yet to try it in a (TRADEMARK VIOLATION) with some ginger beer, which is the ultimate test for a dark rum. This rum feels elegant for the price, and I was thoroughly impressed. A great value dark rum that can be enjoyed neat or easily mixed for a flavor boost. It's at least worth trying to paint it black with this one.

Tastes like you mixed vodka with rubbing alcohol and added a bit of flavor. Goes down smooth but doesn't have a good flavor. Not the best but it was my first. I would drink it again if it was offered but I wouldn't go out of my way to buy it.

It has a distinct flavor of black olive, which I actually quite like. But other than that, the other flavors present here are not very good. I can't quite describe what they are, but in any case, they certainly come together to taste like something which ought not to be drunk.

If the taste could be refined to highlight the more natural flavors and remove the rest, it could be much better.
