I received this as a gift from a vendor. I only will have a sip on occasion to make it last longer. (ok a few fingers) It's a tasty rum but wayyy over priced. I certainly would not buy this for myself.
Nevermind that the price point for this is Ridiculous with a capital R. The additive orange and almond flavors do not dramatically distinguish it from the XO product, which to me is equally insulting to good rum everywhere. I deem this "not rum."
Almost like a cordial. Good for sipping.
Now this is a beautiful drink. I've started many friends down the road to fine rums with just a taste of this.
I bought a bottle of this in the Bahamas when we were down for Rum Bahamas. It seems thinker and sweeter than the XO. A very good sipper, but not one of my absolute favorites for the price. A good bottle to have in an extensive collection.
Rich flavor, nice spice and orange accents and pure decadence in a glass.
Generally, I like to think I'm not really a Pitbull about drinks I share with friends, but this one; Hah! I have bad news for you all- GET YOUR OWN. Alright, lets talk about WHY I won't share my liquid Gold. Pyrat makes at least three different rums (and I do mean different- just try any two, and you'll understand.) and each of them has a truly unique taste! the Cask 1623 has a almost sweet finish, but doesn't have a sweet lingering aftertaste, just a clean finish.
I tasted this rum along with several other mid-high-end rums where it stood out for its Pyrat-ness - for all the good, or bad, that flavor profile brings to your palette. It's an improvement on the company's XO (which I initially disliked but later grew to...not dislike as much). But the price far out of line with that improvement. Personally I'd have a hard time justifying a bottle purchase.
This is (at the moment) the best rum I have tasted.
It has it all: rich flavors, long aftertaste and enough sugar to satisfy my sweet taste.
It is also the most expensive rum i have bought - and for the price I should not give it a 10 but an 8 maybe.
It has the same orange flavor as the Pyrat XO Rum. But is much richer, witch you should expect at 5 times the price.
overpriced? maby - excelent yes!
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Much like the Black Tot, the Cask 1623 is a very special treat, that requires you to face the high price before getting the experience of the drink. It is clearly a much better beverage than most, complex and multi-layered in flavour with an aroma that lingers for minutes.
I would not, however, necessarily buy this for myself.
