Mount Gay Extra Old (often written "OX") is a blend of rums aged between 8 and 15 years in American bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay Distilleries is the oldest operating distillery in the Americas - producing rum in Barbados since 1703. It's original name was Mount Gilboa, and in 1801 renamed Mount Gay after the distillery's manager Sir John Gay Alleyne.

This is an excellent non-sweet rum with rich aromas suitable for whisky drinkers. The beginning of the nose offers a hint of cinnamon spice, reminds me of the Johnny Walker blue label. Easily one of my favorites.
This is Sooo good
Amazing smell, sweet and oaky.
The thast is tropicaly sweet and full of molasess.
The finish is the best, you get a mouth wash of butter-cookies.
I'm having a lot of fun with this bottle.
I have tried the updated blend, from ex-whisky, ex-bourbon, ex-cognac barrels. This is a beautifully crafted rum, a true classic with slightly lighter tones than the old blend by adding the ex-cognac barrels aged part which I appreciate. Beautiful, rich nose, with hits of coconut, oak and champaign, well matching, balanced taste which adds tones of vanilla, toffee, spices and charred oak. To give it a better score - I would appreciate more refined finish, it is kind of earthy, with hoppy bitterness to it - but nevertheless, it is a an honest unadulterated rum, no sugar, true pleasure.
Nose of crême brulée. Perfectly dry taste, no alcohol burn and long and velvety finish. Very good, and for its value I would probably rate it 9/10.
Mount Gay XO is an extremely solid sipping rum, it is my all time favourite (after Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva and after Santa Teresa 1796). It is less sweet compared with the others
I like the aftertaste and the overall flavour, but it's hard for me to enjoy just due to the harshness of the rum, it feels rather coarse down the throatto me.
This rum is very smooth and yet a bit dry. Lots of butterscotch, vanilla and some spices on the nose. Let it rest for a few minutes and some of the alcoholic character goes away. The taste is heaven, some sweet fruity (without being sugar) tones to start with, then some burned sugar cane, vanilla and it all ends up with more spicy tones and lingers for a while. Most def one of my favourites!
Alcohol on the nose and on the tongue. Not the smooth sipper I was hoping for. Sadly similar to a Myers Style rum but at a price that was higher than I would like to spend on a mixing rum. Disappointed
'ripe banana and toast, followed by vanilla, pastry and...'
"Mount Gay Extra Old rum review by The Ultimate Rum Guide"
It is spicy especially on the finish and a little bit short.
"The nose is very fruity. Raisin, prunes and currants with a little banana and some tropical fruits a little pineapple perhaps."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

This rum goes down very smoothly despite the slightly higher ABV of 43%. It has very nice aftertaste of fruit and wood. If I was going to knock anything at al is I really couldn't detect much of the fruit flavors in the nose but I'm just getting over a cold so that could be the reason for it. While I want rate this quite as high as some of the other rums for Barbados like Four Square it's still a great bargain for the price and will definitely go in my rotation for nightly drams.
