Mount Gay Extra Old (often written "OX") is a blend of rums aged between 8 and 15 years in American bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay Distilleries is the oldest operating distillery in the Americas - producing rum in Barbados since 1703. It's original name was Mount Gilboa, and in 1801 renamed Mount Gay after the distillery's manager Sir John Gay Alleyne.

Vor lรคngerer Zeit bei meinem Vater getrunken, der hatte die Flasche aus dem Urlaub vor Ort mitgebracht, leider damals nur mit Cola getrunken, war aber lecker.

Note: I'm a sipper. My opinion is based on sipping characteristics.
This was the first rum I bought when I came out as rum aficionado and bloodthirsty pirate. And thank God I got it, instead of the Pyrat, as that really made a difference to my experience thereafter. At the time, I somehow managed to obtain it for the equivalent of 19โฌ, which was probably a result of some miscalculation or something. Or it might have been an old stock or whatever but an year later when I decided to get another bottle, it was already going for 40+โฌ which with all the superlatives I can say, to me personally is not justified. Hence I'm gonna rate it at 7, instead of 8, which it otherwise deserves.
DO no like XO label on rum, but this one is worth the name. Nice woody, molasse taste, not too sweet and complex aftertaste. Good for sipping, almost shame to use in drinks.

This is a great introduction to proper unadulterated rum for the masses. Skip all the sugar laden supersweet tosh and reach for this instead. Top of its weight class in the experience for value but would struggle in taste profile against the Foursquare ECS, Velier Hampdens or WPs. Hence the rating of 8. Nothing too complex (smooth as a taste profile is not something i rate highly) but interesting enough to justify its position as one of the better rums for the daily dram.

Ordered this neat at a casino bar in Las Vegas. Was served to me in a plastic cup, which did not prevent me from enjoying it.
This rum is not complex. It simple, but whatโs there of is very high quality. If that makes any sense.
A good choice to sip on.
Smooth, rich- lovely flavour. Consistent and a good mixer.

The barrel aging comes through strong and its pretty darn dry so if you have a sugar tooth your not going to like this. This is a straight up neat in a tumbler whisky and rye drinkers rum. I like that it's bottled at 43% the extra heat makes for a warming session. This is perfect cool weather rum for occasions such as an evening spent on the beach.
I'm doing a side by side with the Brugal 1888 which has a higher grassy cane tone and maybe for that a justified 40% hence smoother quality but still I just think all rum should be bottled above 80 proof.
Both are top notch and side by side it's like Simon and Garfunkel but your not sure which one is Simon.
If you are exploring the world of Rum such as I and are coming from a single malt or bourbon background than this is a 100% sure bet must try at least once. It may not be your favorite but there is no way your going to be disappointed. For me I have placed a rather large 'YES' stamp on my file card.
I now know this is the goods.
