Not nearly as obnoxious as wray and nephew, but both rums share a strong pineapple/citrus aroma on the nose, though wray and nephew smells much more like chemicals than this. It is very funky, and for many it may be too much to have neat or even on the rocks. A tropical cocktail for this would be the best bet; I saw a recipe for a daiquiri using this and then plantation’s stiggins fancy (great rum). I really dont like wray and nephew and so this reminding me of it put me off a bit, but that’s personal. It is worth a try, and if nothing else the artwork on the bottle is attractive enough to add some character to your rum cabinet.
Coconut, butterscotch, banana and FUNK! Potent, boisterous, and enjoyable, but only for the first third or so of the bottle. Then the novelty wears off and you're left wondering "what in the name of Tarzan's Treehouse am I supposed to do with all of this..?"
This Detroit produced rum is made from several Jamaican rums. The label states it is distilled in St. Catherine, Which suggest it is distilled in the Monymusk or Worthy Park distilleries. It is pot stilled and aged in oak for six years before being shipped to Detroit and placed into Moscatel sherry cask. The color is very light. Thge nose is everything you would expect from a Jamaican pot still rum. It has that distinct funkiness of burnt plastic, banana, mango and spice. Its fragrant and refreshing. This is a 100 proof rum, and you can taste that initial alcohol burn that obscure some of the lovely flavors that reach you after the burn has passed. If you are not accustomed to the Jamaican funk you may be turn off a bit at first, but then keep reaching for the glass to renew the experience. A splash of water help to soften the initial burn, but not to much, less you drown out that unique flavor.
Interesting stuff with notes of banana, tropical fruit, chocolate, herbs, pepper, and a nice funkiness. Made at Worthy Park.
I would not sip this as the bite is too much for me and the funk not my cup of rum. A bit sweet with lots of different flavors appearing at different point this is a good mixer. It does grow on you as you sit back with it but it is still a bit funky for me even mixed. I did not blend it in any tiki or traditional drink but believe you will have to be careful in your choices. Would drink it again for a change but not for my bar as a stocking rum.
A lot of funk for a near blanco, but too much sting to enjoy. Maybe in a cocktail.
Love is rum. A great rum for the price point. Has a good amount of funk, and mixes well.
Very different from my bottle of Hamilton Jamaican Black Pot Still... but surprisingly similar to my Hamilton St Lucian 7 year. It’s funk isn’t the dark rotting fruit gaminess of a dark Jamaican but a funk of a lighter variety. It's incredibly estery and I find it a bit overwhelming on its own and it easily dominates the flavor of a drink. Worth it if you love funk, but otherwise I would recommend other Jamaicans that are less overwhelming.
Edit: I regret having finished and not replenished this bottle. It’s funk is alluring and unforgettable.
It’s sharp with a real minty/menthol hit.
"The initial sip is quite woody – not so much aged but definitely a lot of bitter and savoury notes – touch of stewed tea. The finish is quite short."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label
