It was too much for me at first, but after sipping it a couple more times it's grown on me in a huge way. One of my favorites, once you get used to the funk, and great price
As a huge fan of all Jamaican rums, this was a long sought out find for me. I finally found it online from Blackwells. A gold rum in color, which was surprising, I assumed it was a dark rum. Nose definitely Jamaican pot still funk, overripe banana and molasses. Tasting notes were not as funky as I expected, definitely a nice light smoothness, with a sweet natural wine and grape flavor underlying the pot still hogo. I mixed with it a bit but trust me, as a sipper with the wine cask aged flavor, it should always be sipped! One of my favorite sippers ever.
As a lover of the Jamaican funk, I was pleased to discover this rum at Lost Lake in Chicago. Well balanced and integrated pungency, like over-ripe banana, keeps me craving... Didn't have the pleasure of trying it in a Maita'i or Jungle Bird, but something tells me it would be fantastic. I'll be looking to add it to my collection as soon as I can find a bottle.
What can I say about this that hasn't already been said, other than this is a GREAT rum to introduce to your friends (cautiously!) to show them the outer limits of rum. Have them try this and an unaged rum agricole and notice how surprised they are that there's a whole galaxy out there of different flavors under the umbrella of "rum"...
To us, this is so full of banana that's so overripe it's ALMOST gone bad, campfire smoke, all KINDS of tropical fruit and wood... it's a must have in a mai tai and many other drinks... always worth keeping around.
Fantastic. Lots of raisin and grape notes of course. Super funky worthy park distillate. Worth a buy. Maybe more than a few times.
I love this rum, I actually revisited it after getting into Jamaican rums, I guess I didn't realize how good (for the $) it was. Nice strong and good funk / hogo with mild barrel notes, good nose and flavor, dry, not the strongest nose or profile but still great over all. from what I understand from two James it is Continental aged in Michigan, probably why it has very light barrel notes compared to tropical aged rums. Conveniently two James is 6 miles down mich ave from me and the liquor store near my house has it for $25.08 per bottle. Makes this an easy choice to keep for cocktail duty, and as a sipper.
Big Jam funk, big 50% ABV great price!! This is for the true rum lovers out there. Itโs a gift at this price.
I just got my first bottle of this, I have to say, I love the Jamaican Funk!! It makes some good drinks for real - itโs a fun rum.
An absolute funk bomb on the nose, huuuuuge aromas of overripe/rotting fruit, especially banana, with some subtle notes of sun-dried raisins and apricots. Pungent in a way that smacks you in the face and demands you take notice. Initial taste is a little bit of ethanol sharpness followed immediately by some woody tannin laced with dried fruits and a dry bitterness like a black tea almost? Quite complex and interesting to pull flavors out of over a couple of sips. The finish is fairly short, but leaves the lingering black tea notes and banana esters sticking around a good bit longer. Weird and wonderful, quite unlike most things I've had before.
Itโs sharp with a real minty/menthol hit.
"The initial sip is quite woody โ not so much aged but definitely a lot of bitter and savoury notes โ touch of stewed tea. The finish is quite short."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

This rum is truly amazing. Whether youโre mixing or sipping youโll be very pleased. Lots of perfectly ripe banana, some grass and other vegetal flavors, coconut, and citrus. I love sipping it but also think it shines in tiki cocktails and is a great way to mix it up from your other favorite rums. Like any high ester fruit bomb and funk Jamaican rum, mix sparingly as it can very easily overpower your cocktail. Enjoy!
