Malibu Coconut Rum is distilled from fermented molasses and blended with coconut and sugar. The brand is owned by one of the world's largest spirits producers, Pernod Ricard.
Currently produced in Canada, Malibu Coconut rum was originally made in Curaçao from fruit spirits flavored with coconut and rum. The original recipe was developed as a shortcut for bartenders making Piña Coladas, however today the stands on its own.

It's a cheap flavored rum. You get what you play for. If you need it, get it.
Arguably that it is a real rum. But who didn't have a try, maybe mixed with coke. It just brings back memories.
If you like drinking something with a strong coconut and sugar flavour this is great for you. Almost like comparing a gastronomic restaurant and a fast food, this is good but not for everyone or for every situation. Good with pineapple juice by the poolside for example.
You probably thought this was rum (when you were a young buck).....
but surely NOT NOW!
Ah but how it brings back memories :P
Not a rum at all, but this one can be useful to flavor the pina colada.
When I ran out of my first bottle of coconut rum (a gift) I went to the store to replace it. I figured a bottle of coconut rum is like any other bottle of coconut rum. Oh boy was I wrong. Awful, artificial coconut flavor and way too sweet. You can't possibly put more than a quarter ounce of this stuff into a cocktail, but why even subject yourself to that? Please go get yourself a bottle of Siesta Key or Brinley Gold Coconut. Is a 1 too harsh? Maybe, but this has no right calling itself rum.
Calling this "rum" is quite a stretch--instead it's a 42-proof coconut liqueur with some spirits added that might be rum--and I sometimes enjoy it on ice as a nightcap. I also like Mozart chocolate liqueur, Irish cream, Kahlua, and Blue Chair Bay Banana Rum as occasional nightcaps...they're flavorful, they settle my stomach and they're pleasantly calming. The Malibu is quite sweet but doesn't taste artificial. It's inexpensive and doesn't misrepresent itself...it can be a pleasing drink. It ain't rum IMO, but it's not bad for what it is.

Malibu Coconut Rum…Malibu is synonymous with the flavored rum category. Heck they might have invented it! Isn’t this usually everyone’s first coconut rum? Here I am just now getting to it. Was it worth the wait? Nope.
The aroma when I first opened the bottle was very nice. Pretty much what i expected. The smell suntan lotion. It’s like being poolside at a cheap hotel on a hot day. The taste? I was a bit let down. Sure there was some coconut and sugar. Lots of sugar really. But still I can’t believe with all that sweet how much of a bitter finish there is in Malibu Coconut Rum. Quite a bit of astringency for only clocking in at 42 octane. Even with a very small amount in my standard Tampico Citrus Punch that bitter finish just reared it’s ugly…tail.
The verdict? I will stick to Whaler’s or Cruzan for my low octane coconut rum mixers. Parrot Bay 90 proof coconut rum when I need some kick.
