Malibu Coconut Rum is distilled from fermented molasses and blended with coconut and sugar. The brand is owned by one of the world's largest spirits producers, Pernod Ricard.
Currently produced in Canada, Malibu Coconut rum was originally made in Curaçao from fruit spirits flavored with coconut and rum. The original recipe was developed as a shortcut for bartenders making Piña Coladas, however today the stands on its own.

It is not a bottle i would even consider to buy. But i tried this out of curiosity in a bar recently. It does not taste like a rum at all. It was very sweet and is coconut flavoured at 21%ABV... Sweeter than anything i ever had before. The bottle is very affordable and looks fancy. It is nothing for serious rum drinkers.
Malibu pretty much speaks for itself. It's super sweet and used to add coconut flavor to your tropical beverages without overpowering your main spirit. Malibu can practically be drank like juice, but enjoying it neat is a good way to give yourself a head ache. I think malibu should be in everyone's cabinet just based off of its versatility.
A verry sweet liquor, white an thick consistency, a good one for making pina coladas
Arrgh! This not be rum! This be an imp of Satan! She smells and tastes of coconut, but there be NO alcohol. A shipload of sugar to be sure, but NO alcohol. A sticky sweet awful mess best left for mixin' with things that will cut through the sweet. Vinegar perhaps. A plague on it!
Tastes fine, like coconut with a little bit of college. It is what it is. Very strong on the coconut flavor very little in the way of rum flavor. Nothing wrong with it for what it is, fairly inoffensive, but its definitely not great. Perfect for parties.

Malibu Coconut Rum…Malibu is synonymous with the flavored rum category. Heck they might have invented it! Isn’t this usually everyone’s first coconut rum? Here I am just now getting to it. Was it worth the wait? Nope.
The aroma when I first opened the bottle was very nice. Pretty much what i expected. The smell suntan lotion. It’s like being poolside at a cheap hotel on a hot day. The taste? I was a bit let down. Sure there was some coconut and sugar. Lots of sugar really. But still I can’t believe with all that sweet how much of a bitter finish there is in Malibu Coconut Rum. Quite a bit of astringency for only clocking in at 42 octane. Even with a very small amount in my standard Tampico Citrus Punch that bitter finish just reared it’s ugly…tail.
The verdict? I will stick to Whaler’s or Cruzan for my low octane coconut rum mixers. Parrot Bay 90 proof coconut rum when I need some kick.
