Appleton Estate Special Gold rum

Appleton Estate Special Gold

Jamaica | Gold | 40% ABV

Appleton Estate Special Gold rum is made using column and pot stills. The rum is then aged in Jack Daniel’s whiskey barrels and hand-blended.

The Special Gold Appleton brand is said to have been first blended during World War II as a substitute for whiskey, which was at the time difficult to find.

Kind of harsh and strong burn going down. Doesn't really pack much flavor due to the limited time resting in barrels. Definitely a rum to be mixed, never enjoyed neat. Basic rum for having at home to make rum and cokes since the rum will set you back about $15 or so. I would definitely spend a little more and get a decent rum that can be enjoyed neat as well as mixed in your favorite cocktail. Diplomatico and Flor de Cana come to mind.

That's not worts rum I've tried but without coca-cola....is just not good. If you want to try that....that's just for drinks.

Sugar 0 GPL.
Should be in a thin bottle to match the thin taste. Use a mixer, and with the thin taste you will need to add a bit more than usual. A friend had this in a Mojito and I tried one as well. Hard to taste any rum and I watched the bartender make it. Tried it neat and the taste was there for a moment and then it was gone. Not offensive in taste but it does compete with the Bacardi mixing rums, and for fans of Appleton's on vacation, I can see why it's used.

Tasty mixing rum. Good with standard Coke or Coke zero

It's not the best rum I've ever had but it is one of my favorites. Mainly because I only drink it when I'm in Jamaica. It's not the smoothest of rums but mixes well with just about anything.

This is what I would consider to be standard rum. Made in Jamaica, a little bitter by itself, mixes great.

"Easily consumable in a bind" is apt if you drink it as a mix. When we were in Mexico in Sept 2016, the bartender questioned whether I really wanted this "on the rocks?" He was right and got a good tip for his warning.

If you are looking for a "gold" mixer, or a good jamaican style mixer this is a great option. It does have its own specific flavor that seems to generate love or hate, but I find that for a well rounded Tiki collection this is a great option.
