Gosling's Black Seal rum

Gosling's Black Seal

Bermuda | Dark | 40% ABV

The James Gosling family business first produced Gosling Black Seal rum in 1806, and it is now the oldest surviving business on the island of Burmuda.

Gosling 'Black Seal' rum received it's name from the black wax originally used to seal the bottles. It is Bermuda's most widely exported product and considered the nation's national drink.

Good with cola mixer. Dark treacle with a hint of liquorice. Not great neat to be honest. Sweet, smooth. Good value.

The benchmark for a Dark and Stormy. Drinkable with ice, but fantastic with a good Ginger beer.
Also mixes will with cola, but I love the way it stands up with a solid Ginger beer. (Fentiman's is my preferred mixer!)

Incredible value. It’s like a mini diplomático reserva. Great body and flavor.

Gosling's is not a rum that will change your life. It's a good rum with a consistent quality from one bottle to the next. Vanilla, molasses, a touch of banana and caramel. This is probably not something you'll want to sip neat or on the rocks, but it works in plenty of classic cocktails.

Nice sweet dark rum. I had it with sprite and could taste the molasses.

a burnt rum smelling rum. I am apprehensive. Very strange at first, I didn’t like my first sip. However as I drunk more I couldn’t stop. I’m not sure what it is but it warmed on me. Slightly coffee tatse? It’s moderately sweet and doesn’t have a flat aftertaste that I’d expect. I actually would drink again. Overall 9

I could not pass by indifferently after hearing the legend about origins of Dark 'n Stormy - and so Goslings Black Seal arrived finally in my cabinet.

Mixed: I was delighted when trying Bermuda's national cocktail, in my case Fentimans Ginger Beer with Black Seal on top. Worth recommendation!
On the rocks: Yes, worth trying if you are not fan of mixing. Ice makes the whole tasting experience much smoother.
Neat: Not for me. Too much alcohol burn, although you can still taste good stuff in the background.

Although I rather aim to taste more aged rums, Goslings BS caught my attention and I'm glad that it did. Interesting story behind the brand, quality dark rum, delightful Dark 'n Stormy - all convinced me, that having Black Seal in cabinet is a good way to go.

I use it quite a bit for tiki drinks that need a dark rum.

This, along with Plantation Barbados Grande Reserve, is my favorite budget sipping rum. Looks great in the glass with a fairly dark color. Didn't stick out in presentation, taste, or smoothness, but it doesn't need to either. It's a solid sipping rum for a great price.
