Whiskey like rum with a big punch. For the nose it's like a smooth rum but for the gum it comes with a big kick in the balls. Only for sailors. Poured some water in it and it got better. If you got a hairy chest this one is for you.
It's fine essence of navy rums, great for punch or grog.
Bought for my dad and my for Christmas, we enjoyed it.
I was really looking forwards to trying this one.....Whilst the flavour was pleasant, the high alchohol content did not allow me to appreciate it as a sipper. Does not mix well with coke but pleasant with some ginger.
Disappointed, but this is more I suspect down to my palette rather than the rum.
Tasty, with a good palate and some sweetness. Good for sipping or mixning...
At first on the nose and palate you get a spicy/peppery hit from the strong bitter molasses, but once it breathes a little it seems to get smoother, and then flavours separate a little and the complexity reaches its pinnacle with the notes of caramel, vanilla, and honey coming forth.
I tried straight and with a light splash of ginger, though I can imagine that the mainstream proof version would be more palatable for most as this one needs a little time and appreciation. For me, this one is a sipper with a ball of ice.
I have tried about 1/4 of the Rums on here, and no way can review them all. I do review a few that I still like or stand out. I do mostly Tiki drinks. This is one of my favorites as it cuts through and has the flavor and richness I am looking for.
A good navy rum that has an appealing amber coloring. The flavors of molasses, oak, and nutmeg(?) seem at the forefront with a touch of funk. A little smoother than the traditional blue label. Not the most amazing rum out there, but I understand why the Royal Navy lads miss their daily ration. Quite enjoyable especially for the price point.
been waiting for this for a while as its such an iconic brand and it didn't disappoint. As in many overproofs this is heat forward but in the best way. I was ready for the heat which wasn't harsh but a bit disappointed there were fewer identifying flavors in either smell or taste. I added the smallest amount of coke and that helped in many respects. still on the lookout for a great overproof. that's half the fun!
It is fruity, hints of smokiness.
"It’s not sickly and overly spiced like some navy rums. There is a real complexity about this rum with a lot of flavour. ."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

The aroma is very full and vibrant with soaked raisins, dark chocolate mousse, sweet pipe tobacco, cinnamon and flambeed banana. It's hard not to like that composition.
The taste is not surprisingly a bit "explosive" given the 54,5% vol. but it doesn't seem completely out of control. An intense flurry of toffee, nutmeg, ginger, honey, black tea and oak washes over the tongue but I don't feel mistreated by the strong spirit. The tingling spices linger for a good while, eventually leaving me with a warm feeling in the chest and the subtle taste of rum soaked raisins.
I'm starting to think that quite a few of the cheaper overproof rum are really good value, because you get so much taste compared to the majority of rum in this pricrange. Another great example of overproof, ridiculous value is smith n' cross.
