Also not expensive ($22 at Total Wine in CA). I prefer sweeter FWIW

I’m usually a big fan of rums from Barbados. This one is too bitter. Nice with a splash of coke.

This one definitely rates above it's price point. $22 for an 8 year is pretty good anyway, so I said "why not?" and purchased. Sharp mouth with long spicy throat feel leading into an nice fading finish. Brown sugar, ripe plum, and a hint of smokiness are the flavors I'm getting. A tad sweet, but the dry finish is washes it out.

EDIT: The longer I let it breathe the smoother it gets in both mouth feel and flavor profile. I like it around the 20 min. mark.

I found this hidden gem by recommendation from an employee at Total Wines & More. For the price, I just had to try it. So let me start with this: for a $20 bottle of rum, I am pleased. As many have said, it would make a good mixer rum, but it also makes a decent sipper.
True, the taste does not have the complexities of pricier rums, but if they added the complexities, they'd be selling it for more. Mild, as stated in every review is true, goes down smooth with aftertastes of dry spices and oaky barrel aging. More of a dry rum than a sweet rum, minus all those hidden flavors that add to the reason we all love rum. To me, this is the rum you would have tasted on board the local pirate ship in the 1700's. Just rum. Nothing else.
For the price, you can't afford not to try it. And afterwards, I'll not be surprised if you add it to your shopping list too.

896 has got an elegant bottle, and looks the part of a more expensive rum. It tastes the part too. Smooth and mild, with some sweetness up front and a refreshing finish, I was surprised how good it was. Definitely punches above it's weight. Great for mixing.

I gave this rum a try after seeing the ratings at total wine and more and seeing that it was more than 50% cheaper than Plantation XO which I think is a fantastic rum. Total wine and more did a nice job of pushing this item and I fell for it. This rum really is not bad but it is not good. For a rum that is supposedly aged 8 years it really does lack character. Initial sip is okay but it I found a longer aftertaste of just a very alcohol taste that can be found in the bottom shelf rums. Yeah for $22 I shouldn't expect the best but plantation 5 year is around the same price and it is much better. Will not buy again.

A Great rum for mixing in coke or some ginger beer; brings out a lot of the flavor. It just isn't the best for sipping straight.

I originally bought this to be a gold mixing rum as I was getting low. The reviews were pretty good, so I bought the rum. Did a taste testing with my other mixing golds, and this is far superior to them. I also did a taste testing to my sipping rums. While it was not a smooth, it was one I could do an evening supping over ice.
