Very good taste, aroma and like to drink with friends.
I'm suspicious of this rum because so many of the brands from South America seem to be doctored with flavorings, colorants and added sugar without the slightest regard for ethical practices. This one features chocolate, coffee, spice and anise - it's positively tasty as all get up, but should the label say "flavored rum"? The company say that it's made, not from molasses but from "sugar cane honey". Same as St. Nicholas Abbey rums. However, Dictador and St. Nick's are polar opposites. This rum is not at all subtle, with flavors that will demand your attention. It's delicious, but can we see a list of ingredients? I didn't think so...
Tasted right after his little brother Perpetual, this XO Insolent is smoother. It has the same beautiful dark color and leaves long legs on your glass. It looks like less alcoholic but it is also a 40%. This Dictator XO Insolent is very smooth, easy to drink. For sweet rum lovers. Love it !
The smell that greets you is fantastic. Very enticing and makes you want to dive in. My first impression was butterscotch. A very smooth rum and easy to sip (which is my favorite way to enjoy!).
Great , powerful but expensive 180$ CAD.
I love this Rum, It's smooth and it's a criminal when you start tasting it.
It's so soft and smooth that you have any idea on a moment that your bottle is 25% empty. Good flavours
Tasted this back to back with the dictador 20yr old.
This tastes much "thinner" and much more alcohol.
Still quite sweet and a little toffee. A little chewy.
For me not as good as the 20 yr old. I think it is a fair bit more expensive.
This rum is tremendous. Unique, smooth and enjoyable to the last drop.
This is a smooth and drinkable run. Not as sweet as Zacapa or Zaya. Complex flavors including butterscotch, toffee, banana as well as some nuts and berries. My biggest issue is that i can find 10 rums that are much better for half the price
Originally tried the 12yr Dictador and was blown away so had to give this a go. Probably the best smelling rum ive tried and tastes amazing whether on its own or with a splash of coke.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

I had this rum as well as the Dictador Perpetual on my wish list ever since I got a bottle of their 20-year rum at Dorignac's in New Orleans. I found this bottle (and a Perpetual) at Total Wine and More in Jacksonville, FL. I am so glad I got it.
Let's get started...
First off, the color of the rum is a gorgeous mahogany..deep and rich.
Excellent legs and a most wonderful aroma in my snifter.
Then the flavor...
Out-freakin'-standing!!!
Honesty, no rum in my history of sampling tastes quite like this. I've seen the testing results and this is not a sugared rum but on the outset there is a wonderful subtle sweetness along with the closest-to-perfect vanilla/toffee flavor I have ever tasted. Further sippings give me a little cinnamon/sugar buttery toast flavor. This comes as close to a 10 as I will consider.
Burn? Not even a major warmth. This rum envelopes you in a cozy blanket in the throat. No burn. The finish is a tad dry with the vanilla/toffee flavor even more predominate but not overwhelming.
Whomever is the rum-master behind this specific rum deserves major kudos. I would love to shake his or her hand. AWESOME!!!
Mixing rum? Perish the thought!!!
This is a sipping rum through and through. Nothing else.
Next time I'm in Jacksonville, I am getting at least one more bottle to have on-hand.
If you come across a bottle of this, get it. It's worth every penny of the $100 USD. This is one of the best rums I have ever tasted.
I think I have found my new favorite rum.
Okay...for those of you asking why I didn't give it a 10, let me explain once again...
Personally speaking I cannot give any rum a 10 because I do not believe a perfect rum exists. The late great Vince Lombardi once said, "Gentlemen, we are going to relentlessly chase perfection, knowing full well we will not catch it, because nothing is perfect. But we are going to relentlessly chase it, because in the process we will catch excellence. I am not remotely interested in just being good."
And this rum embodies what Coach Lombardi meant.
