Let me say this beforehand...I am indeed biased at the outset since I am a fan of Richard Seale's lineup of rums. I also have a huge amount of respect for the man due to his philosophy of being open and upfront about his product. No double-speak. No smoke-and-mirrors. No malarky.

Now with that being said...

[BTW, I do not work for Mr. Seale nor do I know him personally. Although I'd like to meet him and shake his hand.]

A beautiful amber hue with bronze on the edges. It has exceptional legs in my snifter. The rum slowly drifting down the sides in unbroken rivulets. The aroma is enticing and tickles my nose with some pepperiness.

Oh, and the flavor! Noticeable vanilla, caramel, and toffee with a peppery bite along with some tannin bitterness. There seems to be a little cinnamon in there as well (maybe I am imagining that). A little burn which fades rather quickly. It is a little dry. There is a natural sweetness to it from the port cask but not at all overwhelming. No sugaring. None. Nada. Any sweetness comes naturally from the sugar cane molasses and the woods in the barrels and casks.

This is a true rum lover's sipping rum. Any other company would charge close to $100 or more for something like this but I got mine for under $40. I was extremely surprised to find it locally since Foursquare products...in fact, any of Seale's rums...have ever been sold locally. I bought extra bottle in case the local availability was a fluke. I hope that the local stores might carry more of the Seale line of rums.

In short, this is arguably the best sipping rum in my collection and one I wholeheartedly endorse. Seek this one out, folks. This is what rum should always be.

I tried this one at last rum tasting event...I was surprised how nice it tasted! No added sugar, which you will like after all those Riise/Zacapa/DonPapa.
They store it 3 years in US white oak casks, then 6 years in port casks. It is a crossover between port and rum, which makes it unique.
For this price a must have with very nice bottle!

Nose: mild alcohol, cherry
Body: no extra sweetness, strong, port taste, bit of vanilla
Tail: raw, very long lasting, opening up
Bottle: definitely upper average!

This is one of the oddest profiles on a rum I have ran across to date. While it is rather smooth it does have a strong cask influence from the port. Meaning just that really the port is the main note here. It does have some very nice spice going on behind the port, but this becomes rather muted by the cask influence. Overall not bad if you like port very nice in the mouth and going down. If you want a rum with a rare profile and different taste then this is a good bet. A gripe I had with the US bottle with the wax was that the bottles I bought leaked unopened when upturned. Drops came down the sides. Upon further inspection of the opened bottle there was glass missing at the top of the bottle creating space between the metal screw top. I did not see any glass chip in the bottle so I can only assume that it happened prior to bottling.

Herkomst: Barbados
Distilleerderij: Foursquare
Fles: 70cl met schroefdop.
Abv: 40%.
Kleur: Rood bruin.

Top.

But unfortunately they don't come together very well (at all).

Quite strange, it zig-zags between sweet rum and sour port. Both taste quite nice on their own but together isn't great.

Golden brown in colour, couldn't see any of the red other people mentioned.

Fruity smell.

Very smooth taste, only a slight but very pleasant hint of burn.

"Off" finish similar to a sherried whisky. Slight gap in the aftertaste and then an almost aniseed taste.

More fatness than I would have expected. A very good glass if you are looking for value for the money! It defiantly has the Bajan feel, and brings a aromatic first impression.

Well that is if it is your style as some might find too much wood and too much port influence. But to me, coupled with the sweetness from the port wood, this is a fabulous rum. The rum itself isn't the most complex in the world, but all round this is a winner and at a very sensible price.
