Not all that unique, I guess. Pleasant, dry, and not overly sweet.
Not usually a fan of agricoles but this one I just had to try. Well worth the (reasonable) price and highly enjoyable. I recommend sipping rather than mixing as this rum's taste deserves to be enjoyed fully.
Iโve been meaning to try this rum for the longest time but never got around to trying itโฆI regret that now.
On the nose it has the definite vegetal aroma youโd expect from an agricole. The first sip is way more complex than I expected. You have a sweetness that has hints of toffee, orange and caramel but also has a nice dryness to it.
Iโll definitely will put this in my rotation.
Smells like spiced butterscotch. Tastes exceptionally smooth. Cant put my finger on the spicey notes but it doesnt matter because it tastes so good. Loving it!
Enjoyed a straight pour, but it lacked the depth and complexity my spoiled palate wants at this age and price point. I don't get much "agricole" from it; vanilla sweet, maybe a little too much so for me, with some tobacco and less oak than you'd think. But if you want something approachable, this certainly fits the bill; I can't see anyone seriously disliking it.
Ordered this neat at a casino bar in Las Vegas.
Nose is quite pleasant, the wood from the aging comes through and thereโs a hint of caramel.
Sips very smooth. Clean finish, a little bitter.
Good choice if you want to sip on a cane rum.
Served neat, the nose is interesting but a bit sharp. Something semi-sweet but not directly like caramel / molasses. Bit of earthiness, maybe faint hint of clove or star anise. However that sharpness is nowhere to be found in the rum until the after taste, and it's a pleasant kick. This is quite dry and much smoother than the nose would indicate. Not juicy, sweet, or rich, but definitely packing good flavor. Does not lean too heavily in any direction between spice/sweetness/bitterness. This may be a solid benchmark to judge dry rums upon.
Served with ice/water, the nose loses most of the sharpness but unfortunately also seems to mute many of the other notes. The same follows for tasting: it tends to mellow out a bit too much for my preference. Although the flavor is still quite good, it's just a muted, shackled version of itself at that point.
Stick to this neat and you have a winner for dry rum. I would give this about an 8.5/10, anything noticeably better than this will tend to eat your wallet up real quick. If dry rum is not your thing, then I would point you to maybe El Dorado 15, or some offerings from Ron Diplomatico.
The Barbancourt Estate 15 year has a heavy palate of molasses and brown sugar. It is great for sipping or mixed in drinks.
Easy smooth drinking rum. Used in Haitian rituals. I'd awaken to it. ๐
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

It has been a very long time since I have tried any rum from Barbancourt and since reviews after the quake were mostly bad, I did not want to buy a whole bottle. So I ordered one shot of this 15 year old neat in a well stocked bar. The bottle is totally new, which is why I did not recognize it behind the bar.
It is very dark with no aroma and a slight burn on the tongue with no after burn. There are also no notable flavors and this is just an average tasting dark rum that tries to hide it's agricole roots. For what it is, this one is too expensive at $48 per bottle or $9 per shot. I could not wait to finish it so that I could move on to my third and final trial of rum shots tasted.
Update August 28, 2020: Inspired by a recent review from mujuru and going back to read my original review from more than two years ago, I did not give this rhum a fair shot from a one ounce pour at a bar. No telling how long their bottle had been opened. So I plunked down $44 for my very own bottle today. This time around, I let it breathe in the snifter for 15 minutes. What a difference that made! No offensive aromas and followed by a buttery like taste going down with very little burn. This is the Barbancourt Rhum that I remember from my younger days. Using my list of previously rated agricoles, It had to move up in my ratings from a 5 to an 7. It is now in my top 3 agricoles that I have tried. Thanks mujuru!!!!
