I love the dark Jamaican mixers for my rum drinks, and this one is not to be ignored. Great sweet taste that I like from Jamaica and perfect for those rum punches or a plantation punch. Good color and aroma. Blackwell has a good thing going here and also with his 007 rum which I find as a decent sipper.
Had to try it I tried this with three different colas the best cola that this rum is suited with is cherry Coke. It brings out a vanilla flavor in the drink and enhances the cherry flavor and the Coke I heard a lot of people say bad things about this rum about the fake flavor but it is truly a good rum. These people also said that it has a fake Cherry cola flavor so I went against the grain and I mixed it with straight up cherry Coke and it’s pretty phenomenal! You do taste coconut a hint of it and a chocolatey flavor with the molasses which is very typical among dark rums.
Bon en rhum and coke, doux et vanillé. Bon rapport qualité prix.
Got 2 bottles: El Prohibito 15yo and Blackwell light
ЕlP15 - Highest in melanin ). Easy on nose, easy on palate, medium long aftertaste. Watery. Not spicy nor salty at all, if has added sugar then it's less than 10g\L.
Core of taste is dates and fruits, nuts notes, no barrel touches. Just positive impressions. Drives onto good mood.
BW - still pretty dark, why called light? Impressions are absolutely similar to ElP15, the same water, sugar level and "structure". Just a bit more funky.
Both are just Ok - score 7.5+
This rum is solid without heavy Jamaican Hogo funk going on. I was quite surprised expecting something hard to swallow, but it was better than expected. Great mixer for Dark & stormy’s, Mai tais, etc. nice full body flavor good with coke also.
I love the slender brown bottle, it fits nicely in the hand. When you open it there is an aroma of pineapple with a bit of caramel and cinnamon. The dark copper colour is what pours into the glass. Not a lot of fire but pleasant in the mouth and warming as it goes down. A good everyday rum that I will have in my collection.
Trochu jsem se bál, vzhledem k ceně. Ale velmi příjemný rum. Náznak "pravé" Jamajky s nižší voltáží. Krásně voní i prázdná sklenka.
"sweetness of the aroma is overpowered by the youthfulness..."
"Blackwell Black Gold Special Reserve rum review by The Fat Rum Pirate"
'Deep amber brown in color, Blackwell...'
"Drink Spirits reviews Blackwell Black Gold Special Reserve rum"
The nose is rich, dark molasses and caramel.
"The sweetness of the aroma is overpowered by the youthfulness of the blend and the burn is long lasting and leaves little by way of flavour in the mouth, just heat."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Update: So I purchased a bottle after seeing it on sale. Took it home, tasted it... hated it. Loads of artificial vanilla and some unwelcome cherry cola flavor. Thought it might still work as a mixer. Nope... resulted in the worst Planter's Punch I've ever made. I used some in a punch and gave the rest to a friend.
I'm not sure how I got the original review so wrong. Maybe the recipe changed? Maybe it was just an off day for me? In any case, I do not recommend this bottle unless it really is your only option for a Jamaican. Even then, I'm not sure I would pick it up again. Get Coruba instead, if you can. Even Myers's is better than this. And obviously, a rum like Hamilton Jamaican Pot Still, Xaymaca, Doctor Bird, Mezan, or S&C will just hit it out of the park. It seems Blackwell is made strictly for cola, not cocktails.
4+/5- for my palate, could be a 6 for others
Original:
40%. Not super dark. Warm, caramel-y nose. Hint of funk. Similar to Coruba or Appleton. Sweet entry. Good youthful bite. Slight bitterness. Medium, warming finish.
Not bad. If this was the only dark Jamaican mixer I had access to, I wouldn't be upset. Probably makes a tasty Planter's Punch. Fortunately for me, I have access to many (including ones that are funkier, drier, stronger, more refined, or some combination of the four), and this one lands a few bottles down the list. As the label says, it's "fine" :).
