Zaya Gran Reserva Rum is a blend of molasses-based rums distilled in a five-column still and aged in white oak barrels for up to 12 years.
Zaya rum was initially distilled by Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala in Guatemala. The brand was acquired in 2008 by Infinium Spirits and is now produced in Trinidad and distilled by Angostura.

This is another favorite of mine, almost on the same level as Diplomatico. This was my first top shelf rum, so it's safe to say it got me interested in the world of rum. It's very smooth, almost no burn, and hints of caramel, vanilla, and oak.
Nice as a dessert rum, very sweet (heavy vanilla in particular) and smooth. Can't have more than one or two, though. Can taste the Trini/Angostura influence through and through, as this is basically 1919 with more vanilla and a bit more oak.
A good choice and a good price
A very good sipping rum at a great price. I can find this in all the PA stores.
Had this one chilled and neat. It was full bodied, warm and smooth with a stronger vanilla flavor than most.
The smooth taste of this rum is only outdone by the flavors that follow. This is my go to rum
Almost liqueur-like, IMO.
My fave so far. Perfect for sipping......neat or over rocks.
Very good value and available

Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Zaya was my one of introductions to dark, aged sippers. For a while it was my favorite, but as my pallet becomes more refined, I now find it too sweet for my taste. It is still my hands down favorite for a rum and coke though. On the nose, this rum is delightful. Warm caramel with chocolate and vanilla hints. Taste is pretty much the same. I am certainly aware of the added sugar, and they may be doctoring it with some artificial flavors. Regardless, the end product is very tasty and enjoyable, but you can't help but feel Zaya is not the most honest distiller, and that takes away from the experience. They have recently changed their label from a "a blend of 12 year old rums", to "a blend of 12 aged rums". The previous probably wasn't the truth, and the new one is rather vague. I'll still buy Zaya now and then for rum and cokes, but for sipping there are just far too many better rums. But if you like it sweet, and don't mind that they use sugar and maybe flavorings to get the end product, I would recommend it.
