Vizcaya VXOP rum is produced from sugar cane that is distilled in small batches then aged for between 18 and 21 years in bourbon casks.
The Oliver & Oliver distillery that produces Vizcaya VXOP rum was founded by Oliver Juanillo in the 1800s. It originally operated in Cuba, but in the 1959 revolution moved to the current Dominican Republic location.

Really easy to sip neat and is also an excellent choice for a rum old fashioned. Not the most complex of rums, but very much in the cuban style with tons of smoothness and hints of vanilla and tobacco. The only reason I don't give it a ten is because the Vizcaya Cask 12 exists and that's a better rum in my mind.
7,5:Nose - With a generous pour in my tasting snifter, I initially sense a fair bit of astringency, but it’s fleeting. A swirl adds some oxygen and I can see droplets form then creep slowly back toward the bowl. After letting the rum sit for a minute or two, the astringency has dissipated, and luscious aromas of a bakery take over: butterscotch, caramel, banana and vanilla are all here and in a big way. There is also just a tiny hint of grassy funk that is very intriguing. Did this smooth operator carry over some agricole earthiness through all of that oak?
8:Palate-The rum washes over my tongue with an abundance of sweetness that is quickly followed by a kick of spice. The mouth feel is simultaneously slick and viscous. The butterscotch and caramel are prominent once again, as is the vanilla and banana. Toffee and raisins are here now as well.
8-The finish is long with a hint of orange, pineapple, and just the slightest bit of grassy rum funk mixed with cinnamon and nutmeg. Subsequent sips are just as pleasant as the first.
One of my favourite Dominicans....
Very light, slight almond on the backend. Not buying it again, but it’s a decent sipper.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

I write this as I’m suffering from a cold, so my nose isn’t very trustworthy. Very nice flavors on the tongue with lots of complex tones. Nice, smooth finish with a “warming” burn. Overall, this is a wonderful rum! Nice flavor profile and finish. Hopefully this cold isn’t obscuring anything negative. This is one that I plan to keep stocked up on.
