This is AWESOME with coke when you want to get drunk! Ha. 92 proof. I paid $9.99 for it. Does the job itโs intended to.
Title pretty much says it....92 proof, dark, spiced rum...
Not unpleasant, but a little pricy.
Maybe buy it because it is American?
This is not for the fair sex, (girl), or fancy lads sipping at the yacht club. This is for salty sea dogs who prefer a goat head or two in their dunder pit. Men who cherish the open sea and pour a drink to Neptune at the onset of each and every scandalous voyage. Drink it straight from the skull of a defeated foe or straight from the bottle. Or don't. If it tastes too harsh for ye then me thinks ye be a bit too much a fancy lass. Nuf said.
When the Kraken had and anti-theft device attached and the Doubloon didn't, I should have known... This stuff is horrible. I have better drinks out in the garage or under the sink. Tastes like coal tar. I understand the "it should be used as a mix" thing, but if it tastes terrible going down and leaves a scary aftertaste, it shouldn't go into anything other than paint recycling programs. I gave it 2 bottles instead of one because I haven't died. Yet.
Lets start with the aesthetics of the bottle itself, with it's thick glass base with a wide round bottle, it really throws out an old world feeling. Not to mention the cork cap which is a gold star for any dark liquor to me. Presentation is something nobody seems to care for these days. But lets get onto the rum itself. Now, for a little context, my palate is used to hard whisky and my tounge is not overwhelmed by hard high proof drinks. I am fairly new to the world of rum, which i have decided to enter recently. I have no desire to mix my alcohol with anything. Not even on the rocks. No chilling. Nothing. I want to taste an alcohol for what it is. I have found a new love for rum because of it's instant and explosive flavor. Here we have this Doubloon, some say it tastes of paint thinner or nail polish. I say Jameson is paint thinner. Doubloon explodes with bursts of sweet/bitter plums and vanilla. Very thick, warm to the body, and a very pleasant and fruity aftertaste. Will definitely continue to keep this on my shelf as i expand my taste into this new world. Those of you who would rather pour it down the drain, consider sending it my way. Thirsty for more.
Iโm not sure how the other batches were for the other two reviewers but this is smooth rum with just the right bite for around $15. Price doesnโt determine quality. Poured a glass straight and it is goooood! Did I mention it was only 15 bucks?!
Not CM Black & not Kraken - although that was obviously the niche Doubloon was shooting for. If somebody bought up all the CM Black & Kraken at the store, this will do in a pinch. But mix it. Not a sipper.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

First, most people don't seem to get that Black Spiced Rum ("BSR") was originated as a mixer. You were never meant to drink it neat. Thus the paint thinner feel and taste of Kraken when drunk straight. Before Doubloons, Jonahs Curse gave us a BSR that could both be a mixer and could be had neat. Still a bit harsh, but not nearly as Kraken or Captain Morgan. Captain Morgan BSR, by the way is becoming harder and harder to find.
Second, people also don't seem to get that you need to chill BSR before mixing it, or drinking it neat. Chill, chill, chill. When brought home from the store, any BSR should find a place in your freezer for at least 40 minutes before finding a home in your refrigerator.
Doubloon gives us a BSR that can show us a mixer that does not have that harsh "The worlds going to hell in a hand basket and I'm going out swinging" taste. Drunk neat Doubloon actually is pleasant, which is rare for BSR, except for Jonahs Curse ("JC") mentioned above. This is lighter than JC. Mixed, there is a more smooth, effervescent, taste that says "Roit, mon. Every ting be coo' ronnin'!"
Chilled correctly, mixed correctly, Doubloon is the best on the market. And the fact it has gone from $8 a bottle to $18 in less than a year suggests other people are feeling the same groove. Sadly, this is only available (In the Los Angeles area) at Ralphs. Total Wine has not picked up on it yet. But a change in the wind, says I. ...Heh-hem. Ok so I watched Pirates of the Caribbean the other day. So what? lol.
A sophisticated drink to make every moment less complicated. Try it. Drink it right and you won't be disappointed if looking to relieve a bad day, long weekend or just want to relax.
