Guatemala | Aged | 40% ABV | Column Still (1-4)

Ron Zacapa 23 Solera Rum was created in 1976 in the highlands of Guatemala, where it is distilled in a copper-lined column still from fresh cane juice before solera aging.

The 500 year-old Spanish Sistema Solera method is used to age Ron Zacapa 23 in white oak casks. This results in a combination of rums aged between 6 and 23 years.

The current Ron Zacapa 23 bottle features a woven band around the middle, which is in reference to the original hand woven palm leaf petate bottle cover that covered the bottle.

I just finished drinking the entire 70cl bottle, initially I thought it was an excellent rum, but after trying other things and tasting this thoroughly I think there are better alternatives for the price. I only drink rum neat

A little bit harsh and with this money you can get at least 5 better bottles.

Great flavor and easy to find, but is a little pricy for how good it is.

No so sweet, rather dry rum. In this price range I can find better rums but this one is drinkable, sipable.

8 Nose : it initially gives a bouquet of brown sugar, it reminds a little of a chocolate or caramel/toffee sauce for ice cream or desserts, red, tropical fruits, raisins are there, also a feeling for the aged rums in the blend with a little oak and cocoa coming through.

9 Palate :Upon tasting, the rum is not as sweet as expected. The nosing suggested it could be as sweet as XM or El Dorado. The Zacapa 23 is actually not as dry as XO, but it is oaky, buttery, vanillia, a note of coffee expresses itself. The flavour builds if you leave the rum in your mouth for a little longer allowing it to coat the palate. You then get some of the cocoa flavours, caramel and a little bit of tropical fruit, raisins-sherry finish present.
9 Finish :The rum is very smooth and has almost none aftertaste or alcohol burn. Red fruits, punchy taste is carrying on, with minimum dryness. It is very pleasant to sip.

While on a cruise through the Southern Caribbean, I attended a talk about the history of rum. Very informative , so I tried another rum . Excellent sipping rum but I did not check the price beforehand. Very smooth and flavourful. While not likely to buy a bottle due to the price, I will have a few more while on board.

As a sipper easily the most common choice for starting. Practically no bitterness with 21g/l sugar. A strong aroma of caramel and vanilla. Not the cheapest of the entry bottles but worth it to start here.

Bit better than a 7, but not quite an 8. A little alcohol heat up front, but it fades to a nice smooth rum with some dark brown sugar and spice. Long finish. A little pricy.
