Mhoba American Oak Aged rum

Mhoba American Oak Aged review posted over 2 years ago by Tomy 🇷🇴 | 439 ratings

Mhoba rum, with its Jamaican "funky" spirit, is made from pure fresh Nkomazi cane juice grown at the Mhoba Sugar Estate in South Africa. The distillates come from unique stills built by Robert Greaves, the founder of the brand. The rum is aged for the first time in large glass bottles with pieces of American white oak cut and charcoal burned at the distillery. The rum is then transferred from these "glass barrels" to former South African whisky casks for a second ageing process that will reveal all its gourmet and intense woodiness

Papas Pilar 24 Spanish Sherry Cask Finished rum

Papas Pilar 24 Spanish Sherry Cask Finished review posted almost 3 years ago by Djmillard 🇺🇸 | 24 ratings

This one was available on my local liquor store shelf, and as cheap as I could find anywhere ($42), so I dove right in.

I haven't had the regular Papa's Pilar Dark, but this one is a real treat. It's pretty sweet, but has a depth and complexity of flavor that prevents it from becoming cloying. A little woody, lightly spicy, and with a slight, almost vinegary "twang" that sits well in my mouth, this blend's main flavor is maple, nuts, and dark fruit. Altogether, this makes for a decadent, desserty flavor that's a real treat after meals, with a smoke, or frankly anytime at all.

Beautiful amber in the glass.
Fruity and woody on the nose. Dark red fruits, overripe and heavy draw you down to dark caramel and dark vanilla beans that lie at the bottom of a dark oak barrel. Spices, resins and berries are like stars in the darkness.
Warm and soft on the palate. Salted licorice meets caramel and the fruits are candied in one stroke. Leather, tobacco, resins and exotic spices set delicious cornerstones.
On the finish, the dark flavors come into light once again and dissolve very slowly.
A great Cuban, full of vitality despite the "dark" appearance. For lovers of the Cuban style and connoisseurs. 7++

Zaya Grande Reserva 16-Year rum

Zaya Grande Reserva 16-Year review posted almost 3 years ago by rsx11 🇺🇸 | 5 ratings

I found Zaya to be a smooth, mild (not pungent), rum. It doesn't pack a lot of character but that is OK. It's easy to drink and has a nice vanilla forward taste and nose. I found those vanilla notes worked well in some drinks, where such flavors are desired.
However, I didn't find it to be the best sipper. Here I found the vanilla notes a bit cloying at points.

This WPSE2006 absolutely fits for purpose from my point of view. This has it all until I'm surprised how smoothly balanced this action is with 56% voltages. Great when you smell it. First I licked the drop sideways and I say it will be sweet but, the sip is very balanced. The taste of vanilla, cane, oak with faint tones of caramel and spices. Actually smooth caress. Everything in balance. He fills his mouth, paints the palate. Superb luxury.
Finally, light coffee with a banana note.

Today I have it for the first time, but in my modest collection it already occupies its place and I will return to it, I definitely recommend 🥃

Ron Zacapa 23 Solera rum

Ron Zacapa 23 Solera review posted at Nebe Cocktail & music bar Celnice almost 3 years ago by FraserJ 🇬🇧 | 1 rating

Hi rum lovers. I've been a lover of rums since I had my first entanglement with Captain Morgan when I was a teenager. I think eyes liked it more than my young system did. Over indulging, I was sick for days. I had the Dr's thinking it was appendix. I couldn't tell mum because that would have been bad news for my bottom :). I can't even smell the stuff now. I stay well clear. Sorry CM, it goes like that sometimes.

About 15 years ago I was in the bar at Shakespeare's Globe, London and a barman suggested I try a 'Dark n stormy'. I haven't looked back. A version of his drink has been my goto drink ever since. Havana Especial, ginger beer, (not ale as some bar persons make the mistake of doing) a twist and a slice of lime. With the scraped lime outer skin rubbed around the edge of the glass. It is simply divine.

Perhaps 10 years ago I started down the road of premium rums with an Eldorado 12. I've tried many and several since then but my goto premium if I had to choose one for the rest of my life at a fairly reasonable price point would be the Ron Zacapa 23. It was therefore quite a shock to come here and find out about the sugar content and colouring. Many thanks to those reviewers for taking the time to provide that information.

I sat back in my chair in the hotel room I'm currently staying in and really and truly didn't know what to make of it. All these years. alongside the Eldorado 12 and Diplomatico Reserva, the Zacapa 23 has been my favourite. I always pick it up when in a duty free somewhere and always have it at Christmas. I was gutted by that news but in the end I have accepted that I still love it. It may have added sugar and colouring but I still enjoy the complexity of absolutely delicious tastes. There is nothing like it at the price point in my view. The closest being the Diplomatico. Large bottomed whiskey tumbler. a large cube of ice and I feel like I'm having a special moment.

I think based on the rums I've mentioned, It might be safe to say I have a sweet tooth but this rum is not, IMO, over rated. Only, if you don't like it I'd suggest. Don't get me wrong... if price was no option I'd always have the Zacapa XO but that is a rear treat and one I can't justify to often. So if you're in duty free at the moment and you've taken the time to read my essay :) I'd say, don't give it a second thought. Jump on it and enjoy.
