Appleton Estate Extra 12-Year review posted over 2 years ago by PIPEMAN 🇨🇦 | 14 ratings

This was a very smooth and flavourful rum. It was a great value compared to many of the other rums I have tasted over the past year. I appreciated the flavour without the heavy alcohol taste that accompanies many of the others I have tried. I consider this to be a "must have" for my cabinet.

Pere Labat Blanc 59 rum

Pere Labat Blanc 59 review posted over 2 years ago by oedelpino 🇺🇸 | 35 ratings

Tasted neat in a glencairn
Nose: surprisingly approachable at this octane. Brine, some grass, and a hint of citrus
Mouth: Again surprisingly easy for 59% ABV - the nose holds up with sugar cane, citrus, fennel, hints of cucumber and green olives.
Finish: Medium, with vegetal character
Overall an incredible and highly drinkable agricole blanc from Marie Galante at a very generous price point. Makes a lovely Ti' Punch or a daiquiri with tons of character

Rum Fire White Overproof rum

Rum Fire White Overproof review posted over 2 years ago by oedelpino 🇺🇸 | 35 ratings

Tasted neat in a glencairn (water added for subsequent tastings)
Nose: from a distance, rotting bananas, yogurt, alcohol and sweet citrus
Mouth: this is not a sipping rum, obviously. Working past the burn of 63%ABV there's some citrus and earthy pungency. With water: more citrus, brine, earth and pineapple funk.
This is surely an incredible mixer and makes an aggressive daiquiri variant!

Bacardi 8 rum

Bacardi 8 review posted over 2 years ago by oedelpino 🇺🇸 | 35 ratings

Tasted neat in a glencairn
Nose: smells like rum, once the alcohol wafts away...a bit sweet and single note, like rubbing alcohol and a Werther's, if you concentrate you might find a little coffee, a little caramel, a little fruit
Mouth: not great here - some vanilla, some wood, some alcohol burn
Finish: short. Some raw wood spice for a second...
For the price point and age, it certainly won't offend anyone, but not a pour I'll be reaching for anytime soon. Boring and cloying.

Hampden Estate Great House Distillery 2020 Edition rum

Hampden Estate Great House Distillery 2020 Edition review posted over 2 years ago by oedelpino 🇺🇸 | 35 ratings

Tasted neat in a glencairn
Nose: immediately recognizable Hampden notes of tar, rotting fruit, cola, maybe even bring olives, but always with a sweetness
Mouth: an oily feel with the fruits up front - mangoes, bananas - then burnt sugar, brine, tar even notes of cherry cola and licorice. Wild ride!
Finish: long. Next morning even.
This is something special from the nose to finish. Incredible pot still Jamaican!

Clement XO 6-Year rum

Clement XO 6-Year review posted over 2 years ago by oedelpino 🇺🇸 | 35 ratings

Tasted neat in a glencairn
Nose: sultanas, dried figs, pear, peach
Palate: bright fruit leading with peaches and mangoes, caramel, cinnamon, some leather and wood trickling in
Finish: medium, with woody notes
Really a great sipper accentuating the distinct aged agricole vibe

Ron Zacapa 23 Solera rum

Ron Zacapa 23 Solera review posted over 2 years ago by Mekpdue 🇺🇸 | 25 ratings

This is not a true 23 year old rum. That point has been dealt out in many posts before mine. It is a let down.

This blend of rums (different ages-with little 23 year old casket gold) has the dishonor of being further sweetened to appeal to the rum newbies with money to spend.

I will unequivocally state, the rum is a good mixer with Coke, and I haven’t tried it with Coconut water yet. It has aromas of oak, banana, and vanilla. It is a manufactured sweet smell.

The straight sip is pleasant, not overpowering, or bitter with no real burn on the swallow. There is a slight bitterness on the back of the tongue. But no ‘real’ burn like other rums.

I’m not sure about a sipper, but it is good in Coke. This is not molasses based, but sugar cane ‘honey’ which I am liking more and more (think Agricole). And mixes well with the cola.

This is a decently made sweetened rum made for light pallets, but is way overpriced ($49-duty free store Cancun). It’s ok, glad I tried it, but look for it on sale or buy it to say you tried it. As for me, in a very rum unfriendly state (Ohio), I’ll search for some sugar juiced rum (cane-not molasses) for my next bottle.

But not expecting a rum this nice. Especially at this price. This is good stuff. Great dark cognac color. The nose is heavy with Jamaican Funk, banana and wood. I respect Jamaican Funk but it is not my favorite. Many have way too much. But this rum has just the right balance. In fact, the balance in this rum is brilliant. Very slight sweetness, combined with ample punch and the funk. Beautiful. "From my point of view things are shaping up nicely". Some faint coconut notes lingering. Short but full finish. Smooth and supple but oh so well balanced. Worthy of 007. This rum has a definite license to sip.

Have had two bottles of this one for a while. Yesterday evening it was time to taste it.
The nose is spicy and smoky.
On the palate and during the finish is it possible besides this to detect coffee, toffee and hints of nuts and vanilla. The finish is quite long.
Overall a real good Cuban thats having no problem to defend its place in my rumbar.

Chairman’s Reserve 1931 6-12 Years rum

Chairman’s Reserve 1931 6-12 Years review posted over 2 years ago by Mr. Rumantic 🇩🇪 | 296 ratings

The Chairmans Reserve Saint Lucia 1931 is a blend of 14 molasses and sugar cane rums, which have been produced in column and pot style. The rum is a limited bottling, which appears annually and complements the anniversary bottlings. The whole thing is quite a complex topic. The rum is bottled with 46% alcohol in the typical 1931 bottle, which makes a chic high-quality impression.

The nose is fantastic for me and meets my taste very much. Great spicy tobacco notes, also meet coffee, bourbon, vanilla, some mocha and chocolate as well as light floral grassy notes. Here the rum is a blast and I am very happy with that.

On the palate, the rum looks a bit thin at first and the alcohol gives off its sharpness. But then the rum catches itself with intense spicy notes. Tobacco, leather and some coffee pair with some sweetness on tap. Bitter substances make the rum pleasantly dry and the finish is characterized by smoky bourbon and wood notes.

A great rum that is sufficiently complex for me and offers great flavors if you like it spicy. In cask strength it would be probably even more intense. The nose promises a little more than the rum offers in the mouth. But for the nosing a feast. Clear recommendation. I'm looking forward to the other rums from Chairman's Reserve and St. Lucia. A great Start.
