I graduated from college just a few years before Captain Morgan found it's way onto US soil, so that rum was not part of my collegiate years, thank goodness! Now it seems, that all of you young ones prefer The Captain, Bacardi, and to a much lesser extent Cruzan. Malibu flavored rums do not even count in my book as real rums due to the enormous amount of added sugar. Many of the spiced rums may taste good, but will make you pay like hell the next day. When one rates these mass produced column distilled rums higher than a 6, then your credibility automatically goes down. The rest of us seasoned drinkers are all here to get you young ones out of this vicious cycle and onto some really good and affordable rums that are less than $25 US per bottle. Anyone can write five star reviews. For example, about twenty years ago, I was a music writer. Guess what? My fans begged for my fist-in-the-gut 1-star reviews! Those are thankfully rare among rums. However on the flip side, if you find yourself writing the bulk of your reviews rated at 5 or less, then you have evolved into the movie critic who absolutely hates their job for having to sit through all of the dreck released onto the big screens these days. The bulk of my reviews wind up as a 7 or a 6 and this is with the benefits of advice from all of these reviews. It is extremely rare to find a rum that breaks into my top ten percent with a rating of an 8 or higher. Thankfully, only thirty percent wound up rated at 5 or below to never be purchased again. So after all of this rambling, here is my list of good affordable rums. None cost more than $24 US each. The cheapest one is Boqueron Coconut at $10 US. Any of them will gladly watch The Captain drown at sea! Thanks DFW.TX: One day, I will finally get my hands on those rums from Doorly's and Richard Seale that are only available from Total Wine. I am sure that they will also gladly watch The Captain drown.

One808: Yes, Lemon Hart Black Pool Spiced is a very good rum worthy of repeat purchases. However, I paid $30 for my bottle that was found 200 miles away. As I first mentioned, I am trying to keep the cost down below $25 for the Captain Morgan crowd to move up in their rum world. The same holds for Appleton 12 Year, since that one is more than $30.

@Paul B: My bad. I'm in Canada, and the LHBPS is $30 here, so I figured you'd be safe. :)
