I am not a fan of strong distilled drinks. I have tried Whisky, Vodka and Brandy, but I couldn't really distinguish the taste and so I stuck to beer. Rum was the only one I kinda liked, even though I only drank Capt. Morgan and Bacardi. So when my dad wanted to gift me something for a favor I did to him, I started consulting your forum for advice. Needless to say, I now have a beautiful bottle of Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva in my cabinet and I can really taste the difference. So I wanted to thank you all for (indirectly) starting me to appreciate good Rums. Cheers to everybody!

Tommaso, welcome to the vast array of flavors that this wonderful world of rum provides. Since most of them are made from the cheap by-product of sugar refining called molasses, rum is generally cheaper than other distilled spirits. You happened to start out with a sugar bomb that has 41 grams per liter of added sugar. That is 10 teaspoons, which is why it tastes so good. Continue reading the reviews on the most popular rums rated on this site. You have only just begun! Looking forward to your reviews.

Thanks a lot Paul! As I said, I am not a heavy drinker, but I will certainly pay a lot of attention to the reviews for the rums I want to try! I'll write my experience as soon as possible. Cheers!

Ciao, Tommaso welcome to this amazing world of rum ! First of all, enjoy and have fun to discover all the beautiful flavours and fragrances of the distillates. Take your whole live time to grow and float through the different types of rum. Find your favourites and be always open for new experience. Lucky you, you have some excellent bottlers in Italy like Velier or Rossi & Rossi from Rum Nation. They have usually no additives like colour or sugar in the bottle. If you like nice sweet rum like Diplomatico so I recommend the bottlings from Oliver & Oliver in the Dom. Rep. they do for example: Opthimus, Presidente, Punta Cana Club, a lot of sweet rum at a good quality.

Tommaso, what a great start to your reviews. You may eventually lower your rating on Captain Morgan spiced, but you are right on target with the other two. I would also suggest another sugar bomb called El Dorado 12 Year Old. Rums from Columbia such as Dictador and Ron Medellin have no added sugar, but taste sweet due to being aged in barrels that were used to age aguardiente (Columbian cachaca). Try Dictador 12 Year Old if you can find it at about $38 US. Keep up the good work! Oh yes, another thing! With sugar bomb rums (30 grams per liter or more of added sugar), one must consume the whole bottle in four months or less. With a large collection such as mine, it is very easy to keep rums for more than four months and then find out the ugly truth that sugar and oxygen combine to ruin the taste after four months. Dry and semi-dry rums are not affected at all.

Dear Paul, thanks again for the feedback. I recognise by rating of the Capt. Morgan is biased and I for sure gave it a point or two in excess as it was my first, the more I'll know, the more I'll adapt my ratings. I'll definitely be on the lookout for those names, I added them to my list. Thanks a lot for the tip on sweet rums. As I don't drink often, I might have risked to ruin it. It will be useful also if I want to buy another sweet one. Thanks!

Tommaso, here is one more highly recommended rum for you - the 12 year old from Ron Centenario from Costa Rica. Forget the lower and higher aged ones from this distiller as this one is as perfect as one can get. The reason that it did not make into my top 30 initially is because of it's $37 US price tag. Just like tequila aficionados, value is factored into the final score on my rums. However, after comparing several of my dry rums after being left alone for several months, the Ron Centanario 12 was indeed much better tasting that the regular Don Q Anejo, but at more than twice the price. If one goes broke and needs rum, Don Q Anejo is by far the best bang for the buck. As for value, here is how I compute my B/C ratios on rum purchases, which is Benefits divided by Cost. Let TR be the variable for Total Rums and MPA be the variable for Maximum Price Allowed. After rating your rums on this website, then it is time to rank them in your own spreadsheet. The B/C Ratio would then be calculated as: (1+TR-Ranking/TR)/(Cost/MPA) saved as a number with two decimals. Don't laugh! It works (especially when your collection grows)!!!!! You MAY be surprised!!!

Thanks again, I'll add it! I'll keep your scoring system in mind as soon as my collection grows!
