I like all kinds of rum ranging from your drier natural ones like Mt.Gay XO or DonQ Anejo to your sweeter sugar bombs like Ron Zacapa 23 or Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva. That being said I'm looking for rums that fall right in the middle category that have elements from both styles (i.e. some added sugars but not zero or 40g/liter). Some that I've found in the category so far are Bacardi 8 (which I don't love as much as I used to), Ron Del Barrilito 3 Star (which is nice w ice or to mix but I don't prefer to sip), and most recently El Dorado 8 year (which is the most versatile yet IMO). What are your favorite medium-bodied rums that are not too dry or too sweet???

Hi Bob, Try the santa teresa 1796, angostura 1919, Arcane extra aroma or the Nation demerara solera 14. All sweet but not too much like a diplomatico or a millonario.

Hi Bob, while reading your post, I am sat here trying, first time, Diplomatically Mantuano. It's certainly no where near as sweet as its "big brother" DRE, and in my opinion could never be described as "dry". I would suggest it falls right in the category you are looking for. Cheers graham.

Thanks for your input Graham! I haven't seen the Mantuano around my area but I'll keep an eye out for it. I have seen the Diplomatico Reserva but have not tried it yet, only the Reserva Exclusiva which we all know is super sweet. I just picked up a bottle today of Pampero Anniversario Reserva Exclusiva and I'm very happy with it. There are both dry and sweet elements and it's smooth enough to sip. I highly recommend it.

Around 20g/l of sugar you have the Plantation 20th anniversary which I really like. I really want to try the Santa Teresa like it was mentioned earlier.

Hi Francois, The Plantation 20th Anniversary is definitely on my list of rums to try and based on reviews around the web is one of the best values in the rum drinking world. I guess I'm waiting for a special occasion to try it bc it's around $50. US where I live and I haven't quite splurged on it yet. I have kept my spending habits in the $25.-$40. range thus far, and there are some surprisingly great rums available, however I really look forward to the Plantation when I decide to spend a bit more. Cheers!

Also I recently try the Kirk & Sweeney 18y, I dont know his sugar level (by the way do you have a clear list of it?), but I would imagine similar to the Plantation. The bottle is with a friend of mine, so I still have made a head to head with Plantation to say which one I prefer but I really enjoyed it. Finally also the Clement VSOP, no added sugar, I drunk in a bar, was amazing, but to be honest that was not my first rum of the night, so my mouth (and head..) may have been already biased by the ones drunk before.

Bob, if I may, I am not a fan of sweet rums buy really enjoy Santa Teresa 1796 (7 gr S/L), as well as Brugal 1888 (3 gr S/L)), which are not as sweet as the Plantation series (20+ Gr S/L). Check out the reviews on both, you just might enjoy rums that are on the drier side, but not too dry. Both are mid range price in my area and bargains, as far as I'm concerned.

That's Interesting to know Graham. Now I can feel like I'm getting a good deal when I finally buy it. Noteworthy is that I've only seen it at one store that I'm lucky to have about 10 minutes away from me called Total Wine and More. This has been my go to place bc of their rum selection and prices. For example everywhere I see Ron Zacapa 23 it's easily 45 dollars US or more but at that store it's 37. If I do happen to find Plantation 20 anywhere else, I could see it easily being $65. US. I'm not a promoter for Total Wine I swear! Haha! But I hope this helps a fellow rum drinker looking for deals. Cheers!
