Going to Cuba next week and am wondering about the higher end Cuban rums available for purchase from Duty Shops or Hotels and the price range...

Hi Jagsroy, I was in Cuba last year, and you will find that the price of all rums are set by the government. It's the same price in hotels, baristas and shops wherever you buy it. I was surprised at the cost, it's not a great deal cheaper than here in the U.K. All I can suggest is that you try a few and decide from there. Enjoy Cuba, it's a fascinating place, Cheers graham.

Thank you for the info Graham. My intention is to bring back offerings that are not available back home, one of which will be Ron Santiago de Cuba Anajo Superior 11 yr. as for the others, I will have to try them first and decide later. Out if curiosity, what did you bring back to the UK last year?

Hi, Havana club 7 yo & a bottle I can't remember which I bought on the advice of a friendly local whilst out and about. It was ok, but a bit too light for me. Enjoy Cuba. Graham.

Back from Cuba and what a week it was. Great weather, awesome beaches, good staff and food. What else could I ask for? All-inclusive hotels include a variety of rums for guests to sample but the selection does not include the premium rums. In any event, I sampled the following dark/amber rums this week and rated them as follow: 1. Santero 7 yr Rum (8) - 38% 2. Perla del Norte Anejo (7) 3. Mulata de Cuba Palma Superior (7) - 38% 4. Ron Cubay Anejo (7) 5. Havana Club 7 yr (7) 6. Havana Club Anejo Reserva (6) My wife and I brought back (but did not sample) the following premium rums 1. Santiago de Cuba Extra Anejo 12 yr Rum 2. Santiago de Cuba Anejo Superior 11 yr Rum 3. Mulata de Cuba 15 yr Rum Will hang on to these three for a while before sampling.

hi jagsroy, glad you enjoyed Cuba, it's an amazing experience. The bottle I couldn't remember in my earlier post was Legendario, elixir de Cuba. Some say it's not really rum, I remember it being very sweet, almost sickly. How did you find the prices compared to Canada? Graham

Lower end Rums are fairly cheap and usually between $7.60 CUC to $12 CUC ($10 USD - $17 USD). Their premium rums were priced as follow: Santiago de Cuba 11 yr was $40 CUC Santiago de Cuba 12 yr was $50 CUC Mulata de Cuba 15 yr was $75 CUC. I didn't mind paying these prices as the premium rums are quality rums and they are unavailable in Canada. Mind you if money is no object, I saw rums priced between $350 and $650 CUC but that is definitely our of my league. Whenever I return to Cuba, I will focus on other premium rums such as Santero 11 yr ($38 CUC)' Ron Cubay 10 yr ($35 CUC I believe, and others in the $50-$75 CUC range.

Check my shelf for a collection of Cuban rum. I am travelling to Cuba at least once a year to visit family and just love the taste of Cuban rum. Back at home it makes me feel back there again. It's not necessarily the expensive ones you need to try. There are some very good 3-4 Dollar rums they don't export.

Wow, you have tasted a lot of good Cuban Rums Elgrande. Might very well go back to Cuba again next year and intend on bringing back a few more good Bottles of Rum. I really enjoy the taste of Cuban Rum, authentic, unlike many sugar bombs that are now on the market. I regret not bringing back a bottle of Seleccion de Maestro but certainly will on my next trip.
