Guatemala | Aged | 40% ABV | Column Still (1-4) Distilled

Ron Zacapa 23 Solera Rum was created in 1976 in the highlands of Guatemala, where it is distilled in a copper-lined column still from fresh cane juice before solera aging.

The 500 year-old Spanish Sistema Solera method is used to age Ron Zacapa 23 in white oak casks. This results in a combination of rums aged between 6 and 23 years.

The current Ron Zacapa 23 bottle features a woven band around the middle, which is in reference to the original hand woven palm leaf petate bottle cover that covered the bottle.

Expected a lot of this rum. Not so special as I hoped.

This is the right Rum to Start
Smooth and sweet aromas vanilla, , oak, friend Apple , citrus fruits and sherry; pleasant carrying flavors of subtle spicy oak, a nutty element, brown sugar and molasses.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s still good. But you’re paying a premium for the name. It’s the 1942 tequila of the rum world. At least in the United States.

45€/10.2023. Солера 23 си заслужава парите. Но явно има добавени захар и карамел за цвят. На кой му пука какво слагат, след като вкуса е идеален.

A little bit too sweet, but the strong PX aromas make it very approachable.

Warming fruity aroma, smooth toffee taste, low alcohol burn, burnt caramel aftertaste

Although, had they dosed it a bit more, it'd be a liqueur. The premium price tag and misleading solera age statement (given that the average age of this rum is closer to six years) don't help in making me like it. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't taste bad by any means. A few shots of this, preferably chilled, would surely get the party started. Alas, jägermeister does the same job at 40€ less.

Overall, it's perfect if you don't care about money, or diabetes.

I was sure it's the pinnacle of rums below 70 euro. A jewel of the supermarket/discount stores genre. I don't know why - it's just look like it.

At first - still being a rum greenhorn - I was obviously enamoured. Elegant and sweet, plus the phrase "virgin sugarcane honey" surely crancked up my overall feelings.

But after reading the most popular reviews here, I started to thought that yes, it's a bit "too much" of everything. Too sweat, too polished. And yes, it's a great liquor, but a kinda fake rum with those huge amounts of sugar and misleading "23 YO" sign.

I'll gladly drink every drop from my bottle, but since discovering, what Zacapa 23 is like (and knowing it's just very expensive), I'm not sure I'm going to buy it again.

A bit to sweet for my liking, but a very good mixing rum
