This rum truly pairs well with cigars. This is a solid rum with notes of oak and some bourbon hints. I liked it and by far best Barcelo rum to date tasting neat on fresh pallet upgraded to a 9. Hope it’s available for a while.

Usually Dominican rums are not my favorite. This is a HUGE exception. This is excellent. Heavy nose of vanilla and maple. Lots of warm oak, clove, brown sugar and rich almond. Great color. Silky smooth. Viscous. Medium smoldering finish. This is an excellent sipper. First rate.

This beautiful rum is the brain child of former NBA player Karl Malone and the Ron Barcelo rum company. Malone is an avid cigar aficionado and wanted the perfect rum for a cigar. As a rum lover and someone who fell in love with Cohiba’s in Cuba on a vacation years ago, this rum pairs nicely with my cigars and it holds its own as a sipper as well. This rum taste like Barcelo Imperial but 4 times more smooth. The taste is well balanced, bourbon/oak influence from the barrel, and it has a sweetness without being too sweet. Great rum.

I had been seeing this rum on shelves and priced almost double of the $82 US that I paid for it today. This was a no brainer to buy despite the fact that I was never a cigar smoker. I miss the smell of my grandpa's cigars and he grew up near Ybor City's cigar making community. This rum celebrates the founder of the La Aurora cigar factory in the Dominican Republic. It was made by them for cigar lovers and was chosen from many different Barcelo rums over a period of three years. It is then aged for eight years in virgin American white oak barrels, followed by two years of aging in French oak barrels. This leaves out all of the notes that come from the usual charred oak ex-bourbon barrels.

This limited edition rum is bottled at 80 proof and is an extremely smooth sipper. There is no bitter after taste. It earns my initial rating of 9 and I don't easily hand out high ratings.

So what other rums would I compare this one to? Dictador 20 or 12 as well as Eldorado 12 or 8. Also, try Hamilton Demerara 86 or their Florida Rum Society. Yolo Gold would also be a good comparison and much cheaper. In other words, there are a lot cheaper rums for cigar smokers, but not quite as fine as this limited edition rum. If you find one at a good price, grab it before they are all gone! And you do not need to be a cigar lover to enjoy this fine rum.

Update only 3 days later: I took my own advice as just stated above and went back to that store. I bought the last two bottles. I would say that I like it. However, I would venture to say that most fans of Foursquare ECS rums and other high proof rums will probably hate this one. It is just too damn smooth! And all three of my bottles are from October 2017 from a batch of 3000.

Update September 21, 2021: This rum easily passes The Fly Test from one of my Discussions. In other words, since no flies tried to go after my snifter this evening, this rum has no added sugar! This is a damn good dry rum from the Dominican Republic!

Update May 18, 2022: Within a 50 mile radius from where I live, the price on these rums ranges anywhere from $80 US to $135 US, so shop before you buy! Also, it tastes a bit similar to Dos Maderas PX 5+5, but that one has 36 gpl of added sugar (at last tally) and is only $40 US. The side by side taste test proved me wrong.

I enjoyed plenty of this rum while down in the Dominican Republic visiting the La Aurora Cigar Factory. I wish it was more available up here in the states but it goes absolutely amazingly with Dominican cigars.

Smells of a warm, earthy spice. Finishes medium on the palate with notes of spice, subtle earthy notes, deep flavor that doesn't burn. Light caramel and butterscotch but not overly sweet. I can see why this pairs well with cigars, as advertised. The subtle notes, short sweetness, and earthy spice are still mild enough to compliment and highlight most cigars.

Zapach: Pierwszy plan to beczka, karmel.

Ten rum stanowi idealną parę do cygara

OCENA 84/100
