This is my go-to dark rum, rivaled in terms of quality-for-value only by Haiti's Rhum Barbancourt Five-Star. Plantation 5-Year Barbados rum is a fine Bajan offering from the house of Cognac Ferrand. The rum is aged for three to four years in bourbon casks in Barbados and is then shipped to France for a period of one to two years' additional aging in casks that previously held Pierre Ferrand cognac. I don't know of any other spirits producer who goes to this amount of time and effort to produce a rum that is available at a price point of roughly $22.99 per bottle.

The nose offers hints of vanilla and caramel. The taste on the palate is smooth, but, full of molasses flavor. This is probably the best value available in a quality dark rum, this spirit excels in cocktails and makes a fantastic "Dark 'n Stormy."

Very solid. Total rum beginner, only my second purchase. Good on its own or with coke.

Presumably from the French - Bajan home stable (Cognac Ferrand owns West Indies Distillery)
I love Bajan rum - I think nothing gets past Foursquare and St Nicholas Abbey, with Mount Gay trailing behind, as they are now also owned by French Rémy Cointreau.
The Plantation treatment means shipping the originally part-aged rum to France and giving it a second ageing in cognac barrels. Nothing wrong with that, but most lines have a significant "dosage" of extra sugar.
Enough of the preamble.
Tried at JFK lounge: Nice, typical Plantation bottle with a straw skirt. The label had a lot of positive blurb about the content, but is quiet on added sugar or colouring. 40% ABV.
In the glass: A nice honey colour - at 5 years young there must be some caramel involved.
Nose: Sweet caramel, toasted nuts, not much of the Bajan fruit notes.
Mouth: Very gentle, very sweet (4/5), it takes a while for the rest of the flavours to pop out, which are mostly vanilla, a bit of nutmeg, but not much else. The vanilla lingers.
Throat: A short suggestion of a burn, nothing dramatic. None of the expected liveliness of a young rum.

Summary: A very gentile sweet experience dominated by vanilla. For the Diplomatico / Botucal lovers and newcomers to rum. A lot of the Bajan spirit has been lost, but it will do well in cocktails.

Overripe fruit aroma, pineapple, treacle, smoked fruit... Leading to smooth taste of smoked fruit and caramel. Zero alcohol burn. Caramel aftertaste

Despite the relatively high average ratings, i found this to be an ordinary mixing rum. Sweet but not too much. I may have to give it a second chance, as I based myself on tasting a 2cl sample.

Color: Despite its 5-year age statement, the Plantation Barbados Grande Reserve retains a surprising lightness in color. Its subtly golden hue whispers of its time spent maturing, alluding to the flavors waiting to be discovered.

Aroma: A true treat for the senses, the rum's aroma evokes a stroll through a bustling bakery, with toasted marshmallows and rich pipe tobacco filling the air. With further aeration, this olfactory journey uncovers more complex notes, such as bacon, raisins, and prunes, adding a surprising depth to its character.

Body: The body of the Plantation Barbados Grande Reserve is delightfully light yet satisfying. It carries its flavors gracefully, setting the stage for a remarkable tasting experience.

Taste: The initial entry of this rum is a delicate dance of bittersweet and roasted flavors, engaging the palate in an enticing waltz. As it evolves on the midpalate, this rum reveals a near fruity essence reminiscent of baked orchard fruits, coupled with a resiny note. It offers a surprising contrast to the sweetness, bringing a complexity that makes each sip an adventure.

Finish: The Plantation Barbados Grande Reserve finishes on a medium-long, chocolaty note. Its flavors recede swiftly, leaving just a hint of its captivating blend to linger on the palate.

Overall, the Plantation Barbados Grande Reserve 5-Year is a distinctively sweet, tropical Barbadian-style rum. It offers a remarkable taste profile that makes it a versatile choice for aperitifs or classic cocktails, such as the Mai Tai or a Daquiri. Its intriguing array of flavors, coupled with its relative lightness for a 5-year-old rum, earns it a well-deserved 7/10 rating. For those in search of a rum that combines a unique sensory experience with excellent mixability, this rum is certainly worth a pour.

Dark honey colored. Very smooth with a very very slight alcohol heat. Raisins first and Vanilla and Oak come in at the end but not overpowering. One of my favorites sipping room temp and neat.

A solid option for most applications and good price.

This rum is sippable on it's own. Even when you are not on a budget.
An even finer rum for cocktails.

Tasted at Kill Devil Rum Club Plantation tasting at Laka Lono 5/28/20
Notes indicate a smooth sipper with a lovely finish. Aromatic vanilla that carries on into the flavor.
