Thanks so much for submitting a report. It has been emailed to the Rum Captain and will be actioned shortly.
Lightly sweet and fairly heavy bodied. Complex on the wood and dark chocolate. I get this for 55000 pesos locally in Chile (80 bucks or so US, not that I could get it in the USA). Amazing and spectacular for the price. I’ve been through three bottles. Considering buying a few upfront because they may run out eventually....
It is strong, has heavy body and cognac like taste. Nice sipper.
In direct comparison with Ambassador, you can really feel the difference. Single Vintage 2004 has his own "character" - darker with wood tones, while Ambassador is more balanced "blend" :-) I just hope, I will have chance to direct compare with 2002 (or even with 2001).
I have a hard time comparing the Single Vintage 2002 with the new 2004, but perhaps the new one is slightly better, but they are both amazing rums.
This is my first vintage rum from Diplomatico. I just had to try it. The first 12 years were aged in bourbon casks and single malt scotch casks. The final year married the blends and aged them in sherry casks. I can only tolerate 1-3 months of sherry cask aging. The fine print on the side of the gift box required a magnifying glass to read once I brought it home. Had I seen this in the store, I would have never bought it. For half the price of this $80 rum, most of you would be just as happy with a bottle of Brugal 1888, which is what this reminds me of. It is a good thing that I did not rate this one higher, because when these are gone, they are gone for good. This is not a bad rum, but for this price, I would expect a rating of 8 or higher.
Update July 9, 2019: No matter how I try to like this overly sherried rum, I just cannot like it. On the rocks is the best, but even when I add more likable rums to that mix, the excessive sherry aging of this rum dominates. I have no other choice except to lower my initial 7 rating down to a 5, which means that I will never buy this one again, even if available. At least I wound up with a very nice bottle for storing Mai Tais and other non-carbonated tropical drinks. Out of desperation, I added equal parts of premium coconut water (with pulp), and drank that mixture without any ice since it was all stored in the fridge. At least that made it drinkable.
I have been steered in the wrong direction by many of these rave reviews, but I should have brought my reading glasses to read the fine print on the side of the gift box. Three months maximum sherry cask aging for this rum drinker!
It’s up there with the 2000. A simply perfect rum. On the nose this is simply the best rum there is, and it follows through.
It’s pretty much all but gone these days. If you are lucky enough to find a bottle, pay whatever price they are asking. It’s the perfect rum
Nice combination of everything makes from every drop nice event.
Enjoyed a bottle of Diplomatico Single Vintage 2004 with my friend during a vacation. Very nice and high end bottle and label design. Reddish color. Toffee, light oak, plenty of raisins and sherry are clearly identifiable to the nose and palate. Not as smooth as Single VTG 2002, but spectacular compared to a lot of other rums.
Really something special I would take this everyday over a 1000 $ bottle of whisky.
Very nice sipper, not sweet at all and nice cherry aftertaste. Reccomendnwith one ice.
Aucune déception autre que le prix et sa rareté. Au nez, il est instance, on sent la vanille. Au gout, on perçoit le chêne. Il possède une longue finale avec une belle complexité. WOW. C'est mon coup de coeur.
Smooth aged rum. Multiple flavors. Great on the rocks or with soda with a dash of cola tonic. Don’t see this bottle lasting long
Probably the smoothest rum I’ve ever had. I like a Rum Old Fashioned and this was a dream with the diplimatico. Lovely deep flavours and you can definitely taste the sherry cask. My only negative comment is that the taste didn’t last long on the tongue, which was a disappointment because it tasted soo good!
Fantastic in every way. Just a damn good rum that does not break the bank (entirely):)
Excellent in every way, aroma, taste finish. Great pairing for a Cigar.
This rum comes in a beautiful bottle, very elegant and luxurious.
I would say the product inside the bottle is just as splendid. Aroma is somewhat sweet, vanilla, honey, dried fruit, spices, perhaps a hint of wood.
Those flavours fully develop in the taste, however the rum strikes almost a perfect balance between sweetness and spiciness, it doesn't lack depth and complexity, although the product isn't reminiscent of really old rums, which isn't that much of a problem as the aging this has gone through was just enough in this case. I mean... I originally was going to give it a 9 out of 10, but apart from the price/availability, I do not see any negatives.
Very smooth, truly fantastic. Vanilla, honey caramel flavor.
Less sherry than 2002 version, more cognac like. I like the 2002 version slightly more, nevertheless a good drink.
The rich toffee, honey, caramel, vanilla flavour and a spice aftertaste that remind me of a childhood hard candy. Smooth, almost soothing. This is a lovely warm rum that should be enjoyed straight at room temperature or with a small block of ice when it's cold and Christmasey outside.
Unikátní chuť a vůně. Chuť vanilky a ovoce s uzasnym zakončením. Velký zážitek
Lovely nose of toffee and molasses spiced barrel. Deep flavors of toffee again, juicy honey orange, aged barrel, maybe a hint of roasted nuts? This is complex and really really lovely
