Old New Orleans Crystal rum, a double pot-distilled, Louisiana molasses-based rum thatโs charcoal filtered and diluted down to 80 proof with ionized water before itโs bottled unaged.

I was rather underwhelmed by this offering. The nose has a bit of vanilla and alcohol. The palate has a mild sweetness and vanilla that diminishes quickly to the heat of the rum. The finish is medium and a bit of burn. Overall, not bad. Not my choice as a sipper by any means but makes a very nice mojito. The price of around $30 a bottle hurts the value of this rum. There are others that are as good or better for less. I'm glad I tried it, but won't buy a second bottle at that price.
Purchased this while vacationing in New Orleans. Cost was $20.00 and I enjoyed the scent and vanilla flavor of the rum for mixing with cola. I don't think this rum is intended to be anything more than a mixing rum. I don't see myself sipping this straight. It did add a nice unique taste to my drinks.
Better than the amber - much smoother in my opinion. Still, not impressive overall - would have liked more depth and less burn. Packaging is A+ though!
Not a recommended rum either in price or taste. The Aroma is not that bad but not good either, with a rather subdued vanilla scent, but a backdrop of light foul stench, the packaging which is the highlight, is decent with the New Orleans backdrop and solid Natural cork. But the flavor here is just not highly rated against much cheaper white rums or others in the same domestic white range. I would rate this one rather low, possibly the worst Domestic rum I have ever had.
After further tasting: (bottle finished neat)
I fear as though Old New Orleans may have accidentally dropped a few heavily sweat stained sets of gym cloths into the fermentation tank because in the middle of the aroma of this rum between the Vanilla and Alcohol you get a smell that pardon me but smells like sweaty ass. The saving grace that covers the 2nd layer in the nosing is artificial as the vanilla flavor is added to the rum after fermentation.
The flavor is compacted by the strong overbearing alcohol which almost immediately takes over. I am almost glad for the alcohol taste taking over because what I taste before that is not all that pleasurable and akin the the nosing. This may be reserved for cooking or mixing with coke for guests.
Maybe an off small batch, seems to be a bit higher than the labeled 40%
Felt off the entire next day after drinking 7 oz. Not common at this price.
This is a mixing rum, nothing really special about it except for the sugarcane from Louisiana...mixes well with most things. A nice feature on all Old New Orleans rums are the prints on the backside of the label with a print of paintings of historical and beautiful Nola houses.
This rum may be good for mixed drinks and daiquiri mixes but not straight sipping. I thought it lacked character and tastes more like a mild vodka, which ONO is working on next btw. Little insider info from the tour.
Been following these guys for a while. Consistent turnover with distillers make for inconsistent product. I'm not sure what has happened to this rum, but I couldn't get through the most recent bottle.
As mentioned, this rum gives of a somewhat subdued vanilla scent with a fair amount of molasse sweetness and butter cookies backing it. It goes down easily with a laid back sweetness, but nothing special about it. The taste feels somewhat tampered with, but don't know if that's the case. Ok for mixing, but i'm not a big fan.
I recently took the Old New Orleans distiller tour. I tried hard to like the rums, tasting all of them at least twice. I tried the crystal several times, as it is the base rum. I cannot drink this. After a second on the tongue it turns a corner and becomes a sour mess in my mouth. I can taste the fruit and vanilla around it, but cannot get past it. For this reason, I couldn't make myself like the other rums in the line either, not even the 20th Anniversary.
The tour tells the story. They use a "blackstrap" molasses at 70% sugar (awfully high content for blackstrap). The sample molasses I tasted wasn't 70% sweet; it was strong on anise, and was more bitter than expected. They charcoal filter ALL of their high wines. They say it only takes the bad tastes out, but leaves the good tastes in. I was scratching my head on that magic charcoal.
The tour was interesting, and if you have a spare couple of hours in NOLA, then why not take it? A lot of other people on the tour liked the rum, but I had to go straight to a bar afterward to be sure my palate hadn't died from Cajun spice poisoning. It hadn't - it's just something about this rum.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Could be better but is pretty good nonetheless.

Whereas the spiced rum is awesome and the amber rum a little less awesome but still awesome there's a bit of a drop with the Old New Orleans crystal. Can't quite put my finger on it but the aroma in the bottle as well as the snifter seems just a tad....off. Mostly good but has this weird little added aromatic texture that just doesn't get it for me. Flavor-wise it's okay. Has some vanilla tones to it and you can definitely taste the sugar cane but nothing outstanding. The weird aroma element doesn't really translate over into the flavor.
Overall a nice mixing rum I do recommend if you are planning on getting the other rums they offer (I haven't tried the reserve 10 since it was not offered at Dorignac's in Metairie when I was there a couple months back). Works quite well in Coke Zeros.
