Mount Gay Extra Old (often written "OX") is a blend of rums aged between 8 and 15 years in American bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay Distilleries is the oldest operating distillery in the Americas - producing rum in Barbados since 1703. It's original name was Mount Gilboa, and in 1801 renamed Mount Gay after the distillery's manager Sir John Gay Alleyne.
The barrel aging comes through strong and its pretty darn dry so if you have a sugar tooth your not going to like this. This is a straight up neat in a tumbler whisky and rye drinkers rum. I like that it's bottled at 43% the extra heat makes for a warming session. This is perfect cool weather rum for occasions such as an evening spent on the beach.
I'm doing a side by side with the Brugal 1888 which has a higher grassy cane tone and maybe for that a justified 40% hence smoother quality but still I just think all rum should be bottled above 80 proof.
Both are top notch and side by side it's like Simon and Garfunkel but your not sure which one is Simon.
If you are exploring the world of Rum such as I and are coming from a single malt or bourbon background than this is a 100% sure bet must try at least once. It may not be your favorite but there is no way your going to be disappointed. For me I have placed a rather large 'YES' stamp on my file card.
I now know this is the goods.
I have seen some negative ratings for this rum in a few places; I have to say, I was surprised.
This is some tasty stuff!!
If it wasn't for the finish which is really dry and slightly bitter and tends to linger longer then i would prefer; this would be an 8 or 9.
This is what rum should taste like! A quite affordable sipper that's not sweet, yet retains a fruity quality. The rum against which all rum should be measured!
edited to add sugar test results- 0g
Picked it up on an airport deal. Was very disappointed. Not even good enough for a evening sipping rum. Used it as a mixer. Too bad, nice bottle, nice color.
nez doux, caramel
Rhum équilibré avec des notes de fruits murs, banane séchée
The epitome of Barbados rums, generally viewed as one of the best in the world. Complex, rich, spicy, NO added sugar - everything a great aged rum should be.
I surprisingly didn't enjoy my first tasting of Mount Gay Extra Old Rum. It came through very spicy with a long and tart finish. There wasn't the smoothness I typically associate with aged rums, but moreso a bite typical to gold rums. For now I'm sticking with 4/10 until further review.
Great tasting rum, caramel, vanilla, oak, love the viscosity on this one, supper buttery and oily in the finish. Even though is 43% it still super smooth and easy to enjoy. This is a fantastic spirit, one my favorites so far.
This used to be much, much better - Now it is ok, and enjoyable. Bourbon cask offers vanilla (natural kind - not added essence), molasses, dried fruit, a bit creamy in character. Delivers - with no additives. I cannot help think it is filtered and blended a bit too much.
A spicy caramel start with easy finish. Nothing offensive about this one. Good rum to share with friends or a coworker you don’t fully trust yet
An excellent rum. Tastes of caramel with a bit of spice. Smooth finish. Highly recommend
I developed a love for Rum when I lived for 10 years in the US Virgin Islands. But Rum is generally ignored by most of my friends, except as a mixer in drinks with little umbrellas in them. Well, I have opened a few eyes with Mt. Gay XO. The subtle flavor from the bourbon barrels makes this Rum unique. Smooth, dry, with a sweet nose. By the way, I paid 170 NIS, which beats the Partner Price of 176.50 NIS.
Stunning bottle preserving a stunning rum worth sharing with good friends over a glowing fire!
Žádný moučník, ostrý, ale pitelný rum, předčil očekávání
Nice colour. Nice nose Nice taste. This is how a rum should be
Very nice Barbadian from bourbon casks, lovely colour and superb selection of blend, tones of smoke, Vanilla. Smooth aftertaste, long warming.
Gold/brown color with a sweet brownsugarlike taste. Alcoholburn at first but soon after the sweetness takes over. A bit of pinneapple in there.
I’ve found that many rums once they get to this price point let me down. Most are syrupy sweet crap. Mount Gay XO is worth the money. It’s taste so finished and refined. It’s a bottle that I keep going back to.
This is a very good rum. I have a problem where I use most rums under $100 as a mixer. Just a dash of mix but it id because of the burn. For a similar proce you can grab the Zafra 21 which in my opinion is the best value for rum out there.
Jedná se o rum s poněkud drsnější chutí stejně jako Mount Gay Black Barrel. Ovšem tím veškerá podobnost končí. Vůně, chuť i závěr jsou v případě XO o mnoho lepší.
I like their “no sugar added” policy and how they have been able to stand out in the rum business. For rum lovers that are more inclined into a well balanced dry rum, this is for you. You won’t be disappointed, enjoy!
Perfektní vůně: dřevo, rozinky, trochu vanilky a ovoce.
Chuťově není co vytknout. Žádná zbytečná dochucovadla, prostě klasika, takový "praotec Rum". Truchu připomíná whisky.
Po nalití je ho třeba nechat chvilku vydechnout.
Dry. Bone dry, with little or no added sugar. Light in body - bourbon-like. By the end of the bottle I was sold.
It is not as good as the Black Barrel...not by half.
It has a bitterness that I didn't enjoy as I didn't find it a palatable bitterness. I didn't find much sweetness in it either, but there was a burn. Dry too, so if you like dry rums it may be for you.
