Mount Gay XO Extra Old

Note: I'm a sipper. My opinion is based on sipping characteristics.

This was the first rum I bought when I came out as rum aficionado and bloodthirsty pirate. And thank God I got it, instead of the Pyrat, as that really made a difference to my experience thereafter. At the time, I somehow managed to obtain it for the equivalent of 19€, which was probably a result of some miscalculation or something. Or it might have been an old stock or whatever but an year later when I decided to get another bottle, it was already going for 40+€ which with all the superlatives I can say, to me personally is not justified. Hence I'm gonna rate it at 7, instead of 8, which it otherwise deserves.

DO no like XO label on rum, but this one is worth the name. Nice woody, molasse taste, not too sweet and complex aftertaste. Good for sipping, almost shame to use in drinks.

This is a great introduction to proper unadulterated rum for the masses. Skip all the sugar laden supersweet tosh and reach for this instead. Top of its weight class in the experience for value but would struggle in taste profile against the Foursquare ECS, Velier Hampdens or WPs. Hence the rating of 8. Nothing too complex (smooth as a taste profile is not something i rate highly) but interesting enough to justify its position as one of the better rums for the daily dram.

Won’t go wrong with this one, smooth, tasty and all round lekker rum

Ordered this neat at a casino bar in Las Vegas. Was served to me in a plastic cup, which did not prevent me from enjoying it.

This rum is not complex. It simple, but what’s there of is very high quality. If that makes any sense.

Smooth, rich- lovely flavour. Consistent and a good mixer.

Oak and toffee in the nose with a hint of tobacco. On the tongue it greets with caramel, transitions to toffee, and ends with a smooth slight oak. Overall an exceptional rum!

Solid go to rum especially with a cigar. Good price range for this quality aged rum

Strong nose, intense oak.
Wooden amd smooked taste with sweet ending.
