Mount Gay Extra Old (often written "OX") is a blend of rums aged between 8 and 15 years in American bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay Distilleries is the oldest operating distillery in the Americas - producing rum in Barbados since 1703. It's original name was Mount Gilboa, and in 1801 renamed Mount Gay after the distillery's manager Sir John Gay Alleyne.
This is must have rum. Pure marriage between spirit and wood. So easy, so smooth, so Barbados.
Cuban rum was my favorite rum until I drank this. The bottle was empty in no time. Highly recommended!
I don't get easily surprised...but this one did it. If I can put my reaction into one word it would be, smooth.
Despite the "XO" rating there's not much oak to this one. It's there...but its not as strong as you'd expect.
This is a rum that deserves to be from Barbados! It's not cheap but you'll understand the price tag when you enjoy the quality and taste. This is a rum drinker's rum.
What a great Rum Mount Gay XO is. Bought a bottle without any previous experience with mount gay Rum. Sipped with a single cube to perfection.
Simply a great rum from the oldest rum distillery in the world.
Medium color - VERY long on the palate - not too sweet, definite rum flavor unlike some rums that taste more like vanilla extract, perfume or molasses. This is the real deal in sipping rum.
i smell some dark fruits. pepper, ginger, barbados!
i taste fruit and tons of spice. pepper. ginger. some hints of vanilla and chocolate.
10/10 - drop 5 from this score if you love sweet rum.
full bodied powerhouse for a very really fair price. if one god exists and would ask me: take three rums with you to heaven, i think, one of them would be this!
A last minute purchase with not much background on this rum. What an exciting and raw taste that took me by complete surprise. This has easily become one of my favourites.
This Rum is just as Rum should be. Not too sweet, lots of aromas, long lasting. For 30€ the best I got so far.
Wow, this is just a perfect rum. It's impossibly smooth, naturally sweet, full of molasses and toffee, some oak, and a whole lot of perfection. Compare this miraculous rum with Plantation XO (also from Barbados), which has more added sugar than children's juice boxes. You can spend much more for rums which are as good as - but not better - than this one. Straight up, right?
Being a bartender in the past, I have enjoyed my fair share of rum. This rum is my favourite Bajan rum. Easy drinking, neat, on ice or mixed. In the darkest side of Amber. It has great flavour with a dark caramel finish. Very easy to get used to pouring stiff Rum and Cokes.
This rum is top notch. Neat only for me, no plans for mixing. Oak and other flavors up front and nice sweetness to even out the finish.
$50 price tag in my area, when I can find it. I also like the black barrel, but this is worth the extra $20.
Best and most balanced rum I have tasted to date. Banana, tropical fruit, molasses, vanilla and woody notes come through. Sweet but not too sweet this is a lovely drink, straight with ice or mixed. Think it has been said before but agree, Barbados in a bottle.
Very pleasant surprise with this rum fruity aroma smooth to the palate and a subtle tatste of ginger to finish.
While in Barbados in 2011, my wife and I toured the Mount Gay distillery in Bridgetown and sampled some of their products including Mount Gay Eclipse and Mount Gay Extra Old, both of which we used as mix for rum punches. Upon our return home we purchased a bottle of each.
Fast forward to April 2017, the same two bottles are still in our liquor cabinet but are just about empty. Tonight I sipped on the remainder of both products to determine how the two fare as "sipper" Rum.
I must say that I was doubtful either of these two rums would qualify for decent sipping rums given the fact that 1) they were fairly inexpensive and 2) the bottles had been opened 6 years ago and both were less than 1/3 full.
I was pleasantly surprised with both samples of Mount Gay Eclipse and Mount Gay Extra Old. While the Mount Gay Eclipse rum is light and not as complex as the few aged rums I have sampled, it was nevertheless tasty. In my opinion Mount Gay Eclipse is a better mix than a sipping rum.
The second sample (Mount Gay Extra Old) was darker, tastier and more flavourful than the Eclipse and I really enjoyed its taste. Will without a doubt acquire a bottle of Mount Gay Extra Old in the near future. This rum makes an excellent mix but as a stand alone it is a respectable rum to drink neat.
UPDATE (July 2019)
Have now tried 116 different Rums I must say that besides St. Nicholas Abbey 12 Yr rum, Mount Gay XO is my favorite rum. The fact this Rum sells for $50 CAD in my area is enough for me to give it a “10” rating.
Just tried Mount Gay XO for the first time. As someone who has never tried rum that costs more than $30 per bottle, you'd rightly expect I am incredibly impressed. Mount Gay XO has a lovely cinnamony woody aroma, and a nice full flavor in my mouth place. The swallowing action was pleasing to the throat, with a nice warmth. Nothing like that horrible tasteless burn from cheaper rums. I trust I will gain an even higher appreciation for this rum after sampling more rums of similar quality. For now, it's a solid 10 until I try something better. I enjoyed this drink neat with some chocolates
Spitzen Rum zum absolut fairen Preis.
Feine natürliche Süße und etwas Fruchtigkeit. Toller Barbados Rum.
This one is definitely one of my favorites. I'm well aware that it is by far not the best rhum out there, but if I go to a restaurant and see they have this on the map, I know I'm in a good place. And I definitely know what I'm getting for dessert 😁
Another fine Bajan rum. More fruity and less okaed than Seales 10 yo, but not so fruity as to make me think of sherry. There is some banana in this I find absent in Seales, and there's mostly citrus in Doorly's XO. This is just about what I would consider the best for the price. If I want more banana I would have to go to Jamaica, and actually do. Still, this is a nice fine rum that can be enjoyed neat, with a cube, or mixed without feeling like you spent too much for a "mixer" rum. What I mean to say is even if you never enjoy this fine rum neat, you won't be worried. Sure, there are mixing rums that cost far less, but they won't have this rum's smell and taste profile. As for sipping neat or with ice, this is a budget everyday sipper; not the one that sits around oxidizing on the shelf for a decade cause you had to take a loan out to buy the bottle.
There is nothing better than this for the price. You can head upstream but there's diminishing returns for the amount of money you have to spend. I have a bottle of this always. This rum does what many more expensive rums can't, that is remain smooth without added sugar. Compared to the Plantation 20th or the Diplomatico or El Dorado it's not as sweet but it's also unadulterated and more complex. This should be your benchmark.
Nice taste, spice and finish while mixing well or alone
Riktigt god smak som fördelar sig fint i munnen. Inte för söt.
This is where my journey with aged rum began. Up to that point I was a Navy rum man as I was in the Royal Navy at the time.
A trip to the Mount Gay distillery on Barbados changed that. I experienced the blending pride shown by the chief blender to produce this aged masterpiece and then tasted it. Maybe it was the place or the time, but everytime I now sip this I am transported back to a place where real rum lives.
