Barbados | Gold | 40% ABV

Mount Gay Eclipse rum is produced from molasses that is double distilled and aged up to 2 years in white Kentucky oak ex bourbon barrels.

Mount Gay is the oldest existing rum brand in the world, with it's oldest surviving deed being from 1703. The company developed the use of traditional double copper pot stills, a process that has been in continuous use by Mount Gay ever since its founding. The company's namesake Sir John Gay Alleyne was a good friend of John Sober who purchased the then Mount Gilboa distilleries in 1747.

This is a great rum for mixing. However, I typically drink rum neat. So here is my description. It has a mild alcohol scent. Drinking it I notice at first a strong punch of alcohol, but it only lingers a few seconds from the finish. After the first few sips I barely notice the alcohol, and continue to enjoy the rum. At the finish I taste a light vanilla hint. The viscosity is light-bodied and thin. It has a golden-saffron color. Overall, smooth and enjoyable for the price. Usually the best choice at poorly stocked bars. Not the best rum, but certainly not the worst!

Solid and cheap Lucian rum. Pretty sweet but not overly sweet, zesty, slightly oaky. I also felt plenty of raisins and dark fruits. Good choice If you dont want to spend much money and still want a good product. Reccomended

This was the first rum I ever purchased. It was the start of my rum adventure and for that I will always be greatful. I was looking to make homemade egg nog and use the more traditional addition of rum, from the early Americas. In that role it works great. It is a little rough around the edges when compared with other blended lightly aged rums like El Dorado 3 or Plantation 3. As such, I find it less versatile.

When you need something that a few ounces will punch through dairy like in egg nog I would recommend this rum. It is because other alternatives work better in more cocktails that I would give it the 4/10.

As many others have noted, this entry level rum is not meant to stack up against more expensive neat sippers. For me this will always be a cocktail class rum, and for that it does a serviceable job.

Perhaps it's a good cocktail mixer, but for me there's nothing distinguishable that worths writing about.

Good rum with a little spicy essence that differentiates it from the typical rum.

Initial smell wasn’t very good - chemical/alcohol. Then I’m thinking … oh no. But then I sipped. I’m an advanced intermediate rum drinker - by no means an expert.

I could taste the caramel immediately, but in a good way. To me, it’s not as sweet as Diplomatico Reserva. Reminded me of Brach’s caramel candy squares I used to eat as a kid.

No burn, no bad after taste. And after a few great sips, I smelled again and could cleanly smell caramel.

I can’t wait to taste the “better” Dictador’s. But I will say that this was a fine introduction. I look forward to sipping XO.

But in the meantime, I’m going to enjoy the rest of the bottle. For $25 US, I’d say it is one hell of a rum. I’m kinda sad that it was the last bottle at TWN & they didn’t have a label on the shelf, so it was the last bottle :(

Can’t believe that the coffee and orange bottles were a higher price. I definitely recommend giving it a try!

Beautiful colour and a fan enough to visit the distillery in Barbados. Love that it is commonplace in bars and supermarkets.

N: caramel and non-sweet solvent. Rubber. T/F: sweeter than the nose would suggest with a mid-complex finish. Definitely worth upgrading to more expensive Mount Gay offerings.

Love the taste of Barbados rums, but we can expect better from Mt. Gay. Like the clean sweet taste, but would love more barrel and age notes.

Bought this as my go-to was out of stock and was pleasantly surprised. Some nice flavours coming through that stayed in the mouth for longer than expected. Happy to buy again. Good value

Not so much a sipper, with a good amount of spice as a mixer for tasty mojito's & swizzels.
