Unaged crisp and smooth describe this white rhum. Fermented using the sugarcanes first press instead of molasses, a sugarcane byproduct, this is considered an Agricole rhum like those that hail from Martinique. It is a nice rhum for mixing or drinking straight and is distilled in Guatemala.

I bought this bottle as an afterthought. I saw the Montecristo 12-year rum on the shelf in a liquor store in Thomasville, GA and decided to buy it. The premium blend was next to it and since I really don't care for white rums I initially intended to pass but curiosity got the better of me and I got it as well.

The aroma is mildly astringent in the bottle. The flavor is initially somewhat sweet with a definite sugar cane flavor. It is a blend of young rums so this isn't surprising. What is the surprise is that just when you take that taste you think it's a rather smooth rum then...BAM!...it hits you in the throat with a rather harsh burn. Surprise!!!

I imagine some water or ice would tame the harshness somewhat but I think it's strength would be in mixed drinks. It has more flavor than a lot of white rums I've tried. I get some vanilla in it. A very usable rum.

UPDATE: Just tried 3oz in 16.9oz of Coke Zero. Outstanding!

I had never heard of Montecristo before and got this as an impulse buy at a liquor store going out of business. It was $10-$12 so I gave it a try. I usually research all of my rums before I buy, and I wish I had passed on this too. Not bad, but there are so many better rums out there for the same price range, or just a little more. $15 can get you some very good rums.
