This rum is indeed very dark. It's strikes a good balance of sweet and dry, and is slightly unctuous. Not well-suited for sipping, but works beautifully in tiki drinks as a main ingredient or a float. I vastly preferred this bottle to "the other" Hawaii rum distiller, Koloa's, offering. Koloa seems to have a broader distribution, so we'll see how they adapt to the changing sugarcane industry in Hawaii.
This is actually a 6 rum, with an extra point for sentimentality (for those who have visited Maui), and now, rarity. Sadly, the distillery—Haleakala Distillers—seems to have vanished around the end of 2016 along with the Maui sugarcane industry. If you see any of the last bottles floating around, now is the time to snap them up!
I like sipping dark rums, and now that I live in Hawaii, thought I'd try one from the home state. Really strong smelling, like molasses, with a scent of vanilla. A strong aftertaste that goes all the way down your gullet, but it's good, not harsh. After a minute of two the aftertase changes to (oddly enough) bread/nuts taste. It does for me anyway. Certainly a good rum, compared to some of that junk out there. No gasoline smell or taste, not too harsh. Smells a bit like candy, tastes sweet and dark. A bit too sweet for me, is about all I can say.
This was a pleasant surprise. It pours like mault liquor as it is heavy and dark. Without any real knowledge on what is blended in we decided to taste, and were very happy with the results. We think it has hints of caramel, and of course molasses. It is very smooth, with not real afterbite.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Very dark colored rum, works well as a mixer, but I wouldn't recommend as a sipping rum. Not bad, but not the best in the islands when compared with Koloa's offerings.
