I tried this bruiser of a rum at the famous Rum Bar in the beautiful Whitsunday Isles in North Queensland.. wow , what a kick in the face this was..
Im a fan of Mount Gay rums with their "no additives" policy.. love the XO but this is a more skillful blended and complex version.. leave to sit for at least 15 minutes.. lots of oak , bourbon notes , spice , leather and slightly smokey. When you swallow this warms your whole body.. probably not my best idea in tropical north Queensland ! This is a Bang.. in your face rum that I loved , maybe not your average sipper though.. experienced rum drinkers only please.
The nose is very pronounced spicy oak notes. You can almost taste the Bourbon that was in these casks prior. Vanilla, a nice creamy nuttiness and a slight hint of banana, toffee and caramel. Despite the ABV there is very little βmenaceβ as I like to call it. Itβs still a very nice well balanced, skillfully blended spirit.
Sipped even at 63% it is a surprisingly mellow and pleasant experience. I would recommend a little water but not much β just to bring out all the flavour. Not too much or you might as well stuck with the regular XO.
Mount Gay did this one right. Oak, vanilla, toffee, leather, fruits and floral....very well balanced. But, there's a kick on the finish! It's a smooth rum but there's a lingering bite that this sipper provides.
Yes, it's classic. But is almost perfect! Beautiful colour, nice flavour, not to much, not less. With 43% is quite strong, but the alcohol is under control, nothing to shock your nose.
But the flavour is rich! Classically mix af vanilla, caramel and chocolate, and a little bit spice at the end. Maybe because of alcohol, but I think is something real there.
One of the best! For sure is the oldest :)
N- Authentic good rum that brought smile to face are hard to come by. Nose heating at 63% with rich sweetness of creamy oak, earth, banana yoghurt and liquorice along coastal edge. Deep sweet phenol waving in after breath. Sticky sweet glutinous rice pudding with mango. Complex. (92/23)
P- Succulent, vanilla, banana with limey. Caramelize banana skin sort of sweet tannin and rubbery mouthfeel, tarry rope lurking. (90/22)
F- Long, mouth coating, chewy and firm, full of oak fruits and minty. Traces of desired bitterness developed, with fine strength careless on the tongue overtimes. (92/23)
B/B- 93/23

It took me a while to get around to this review. I was busy enjoying this. The first sip is a surprising burn, even when you're on your fourth, first sip. On the second sip, you realise this rum is tantalising. It's rich, full, varied and subtle.
A nice shot sipped, is an experience that makes you smile. every sip, pleasantly surprises you. Caramel, oak, spice, toffee, vanilla, toast, banana... Everything complements each other and i'm excited about this rum, and where Mount Gay is going.
I had this in fall of 2019 and for the price (Euro 35 on sale) it is an outstanding mixer. The first taste is VERY harsh, like Hennessy VS Cognac (good for cooking). With ice cubes it is MUCH better and more like a whiskey. For just sipping, like a good cognac, it was disappointing. However, for mixing the strong flavours really came through in a positive way. A very good value. Overall, a 9 -.
A nice mahogany color with gray green reflections. On the nose are classical notes of banana and chocolate with also coffee. But it seems more complex than the normal XO version. There are also candied fruits, nuts. On the palate, it explodes, the alcohol is well present but very well integrated. The whole is very homogeneous with chocolate always present, candied fruits, pastry notes as usual for Mount Gay. A superb final very long and very complex, it's very rich. A superb realization that finally gives the possibility to the fans of cask strength to find among this brand a product to live up to their expectations.
Real rate = 9,5
When I drink this rum I feel like I am drinking something very good in the classic sense. The lack of added sugar gives it a natural sweetness and a very pleasant rich aroma. For me, as in many other reviews, it is a benchmark for other rums. It presents a high level. Any rum that is better than this certainly deserves attention.
Classically Bajan β very pronounced spicy oak notes.
"Everything seems more concentrated β all the flavours which existed before are present but just in much more clarity. ."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

One of the most complex , and flavorful rum I have tasted. Totally an explosion of aromas; an incredible sipper, and allows you to enjoy even the high content of alcohol. Rich, warm, velvety and fruity.
