Kraken Black Spiced

It is artificial but at least it is sweet I guess..

I have recently got into rum having had a sample pack of Pirate's Grog and then purchasing three bottles which quickly disappeared. On a bit of a whim as I was short on Rum, I snapped up this trendy looking bottle and a quick skim of reviews suggested it was going to be OK.

Definitely not one to have on it's own, it doesn't fair badly when mixed with pineapple juice, coke, ginger beer etc. but when I sampled it neat I found it quite insipid in taste and very "vapourous" if that's a word!

I'm drinking the 47% Kraken bought in duty-free many years ago. Im not a spiced rum drinker/fan, sorry! There is no nuance in Kraken, but at least it's not Captain Morg's or one of those similar cough syrup jobbies. Unfortunately for Kraken theres a lot more spiced rum competition these days...

You would have to love both heavy added sugary-caramel flavour and vanille flavour to like this Rum.
Do NOT let people tell you, that this is a sipping Rum. It simply isn't. The flavour profile is overly sweet and nothing interesting is going on. It is meant to work somewhat in cocktails. Nothing less and nothing more.

Kraken! The spiced finish is brilliant. Perhaps on the more expensive side for a 1L bottle, but worth it if you enjoy black spiced rum, plus a great look on your shelf! Easily drinkable neat, perfect with ginger beer (wouldn't waste it on cola though...) Happy drinking

In this price category, this is one of the better, average rums. An interesting sweet taste that I recommend trying. But not unique.

This bottle started my rum career. Alway enjoyed it neat but it became too sweet for me once I started trying non-spiced rums.

Save the money and buy a better spiced alternative. This was hard to swallow. Get the travel size and see for yourself.

Definitely a divisive rum, but I bought it for mixing specifically and I like it for that. The spices aren’t nuanced, and I get mostly a strong caramel flavor. For a Hurricane I mix equal parts lemon juice, passion fruit sirup, Jamaican rum, and the spiced Kraken, and it adds a nice caramel flavor that easily cuts through everything. I wouldn’t only make it with Kraken, as then it’d be overpowering, but in this combination I quite enjoy it. If you want to drink a spiced rum neat I‘d look elsewhere, but it is exactly what I wanted and expected.
