Para ser un ron con poco tiempo de añejamiento, tiene un sabor muy peculiar, suave y rico.

This rum is meant for mixing and not to be sipped. Good for a rum and cola.

In the bottle, it does not look like a white rum. That is because, technically, it is not a white rum. The rum is aged for 3 years, which is not an insignificant span of time. For comparison, 3 years is the minimum aging for scotch whisky. So we can assume that 3 years is enough to do quite a bit of change to the spirit.

And, indeed, on the nose there is quite a bit of oak-ish wood. The nose is slightly floral (roses?) and also quite dry. Only slightly alcoholic. No comparison to the vodka-like quality of many popular white rums.

Taste is sweeter than the nose would suggest, but not overly so. There is also a slight sourness, which reminds me of white wine and of some irish whiskies. The wood is very pronounced and there might be a hint of smoke in the background. My impression is that of rose wood, which always reminds me of Bourbon, or maybe rhum agricole. The aftertaste is dry and woody.
A bit of water brings out some apricot/pear/apple-like fruit notes. And, as with many spirits, added water brings out more sweetness and reduces the wood notes.

I see absolutely no reason why this should not be a sipping spirit. It works great for that, both with and without ice. Havana Club 3 is not very complex or especially exciting, but it is interesting enough to sip and has absolutely no quality problems that would make doing so inadvisable.

At least in Germany, this is often on sale for just above 10 Euros. For that price, it is an absolute steal. The regular price of about 15 Euros is still worth it, even though I might then consider other rums - but that is mostly due to my preference in rum styles (I like more robust, funky and molassy rums). But I can accept and agree that Havana Club 3 is an excellent example of a very well-made young rum.

I like it with soda water and lime. Soda water brings out a strong almond/marzipan like note, which I enjoy and which goes very well with some lime sourness. No need to add anything sweet, in my opinion. But it also works great in sweet drinks.

If white rum is your thing, or if you need an inexpensive rum for whatever reason, this will serve well.

I don’t understand why this rum isn’t rated higher. It’s about as good as you can get for a white rum without going overproof or chasing a hogo trip. It blows captain & bacardis white rums out of the water and is not to be confused with the other widely available white rum, made by Bacardi, which goes by the same name.

Got this from a friend. Former friend. After gifting this I decided he is not the friend for me. Both smell and taste made me decide to end the friendship. Finished with coke and never thought of this again.

To make it more fun I compared two classics. Botucal(German Diplomatico) and this 3yo Mixer. I made a Cuba libre with a coke light.
You can taste a clear difference there. It was a blind taste. Botucal libre is clearly smoother and you can taste the extra sweetness. Surprisingly good harmony with coke light! Havana libre has a fresh fruity taste but is also harsh and dry. Let's say it was good enough. But I'd prefer Botucal libre.

Quite a tasty rum, great for mixing. Way too simple to drink neat but enjoyable nontheless.

This is one of my favourites for mixing. I enjoy it far better then Bacardi. The taste is warm and smooth, I would not sip it but some friends do. I use it only for cocktails and then it's great.
