Havana Club 3-Year

Very nice rum, great for mixing coctails, but it is nice on it's on

I bought it to make a dessert for my grandma and drank the remaining rum. I’m not a big fan of white liquors so it’s not even close to being and option I’d usually buy. Nice color, quite strong aroma and a lovely sugar cane aftertaste.

Slight yellow colour to it, brings a good flavour to a mixed drink. I don't know that it would be particularly great taking neat, and if this is available you could buy the next step up for not much more. That said, it's a great one to have available for a summertime party where you're going to be doing some mixing.

Like, why would you buy this one and not spend $3 more dollars on the next level?

I used this as a mixer before I discovered the 7 year which is in my opinion always better and can even be used to sip if you don't have anything else around. This one I wouldn't drink pure.

The best way to describe this is milk, you can buy a triple A brand of milk, but it will still taste as... milk. In my vision there are four types of rum needed.

Cheap rum: When your young, you only need the cheapest rum available, go to the party's and share. Be the star of the party without going broke.

Mixing rum: a good neutral tasting rum for a good price, for those lovely moijitos and cubalibres you can share with that special boy or girl you met at those party's. This shows their is more to you than just a party animal. The Havana 7 year or the smiths & Cross are excellent choices for this and only cost a fraction more.

The sipping rum: for the those special evenings you enjoy with friends, you're partner or alone and think back of those great times you had when you were young and partying. You can make this as expansive as you want, but at around 35€ you can have some real decent sipping rums.

Then there is the look at me rum: for those who are young and insecure, call their girlfriends b*tch3s and think Bacardi and rum are two different things. At least they are right about that last bit.

Long story short, the 3 year doesn't really belong anywhere in my opinion, put some more money on the table and get your self something with more character.

Aroma: The aroma of Havana Club 3-Year might be a bit harsh for some, as it doesn't carry the nuanced fragrance of some young aged or spicy quality of most white rums. It's a straightforward, no-nonsense introduction, revealing its true potential not on the nose, but in the mixing glass.

Body: As for the body, it is middle-of-the-road, not overwhelmingly robust, nor excessively light. It is a rum that lends itself more towards mixability than sipping neat.

Taste: On its own, the Havana Club 3-Year may not boast a wealth of complex flavors. However, it does bring a quality rum taste that serves as a reliable and adaptable base in a wide range of cocktails.

Finish: The finish of the Havana Club 3-Year can be a bit lingering when consumed neat. The absence of an immediately smooth finish confirms this rum's destiny as a mixer rather than a standalone sipper.

Cocktail Compatibility: This is where Havana Club 3-Year really comes into its own. It mixes exceedingly well in a variety of cocktails. It serves as an excellent base for a Mojito, Daiquiri, Piña Colada, and Cuba Libre, adding a confident but not overpowering rum character. Its versatility makes it a necessary staple for any cocktail enthusiast's bar.

Overall, given its affordable price point and versatility as a mixer, the Havana Club 3-Year rum deserves a solid 6/10 rating. It may not be the rum of choice for neat drinkers seeking complex flavor profiles and smooth finishes, but as a reliable, mixable white rum, it holds its own. Its "attitude" enhances the character of many a cocktail, making it an essential choice for those who love to experiment with mixology. Given its value and versatility, it certainly earns a place as a recommended rail mixing white rum.

Smell is not bad, but it tastes much worse. If you think it is a class above Bacardi don't delude yourself - maybe a little bit better, but both aren't worth buiyng.

Surprisingly good. A slightly grassy vibe, quite dry, overall way better than I expected.

In the bottle thanks to Admiral Bill who brought this to me from Barcelona. I FINALLY got to try one of the most rated rums from Cuba! Pours clear. Minimal aroma, a bit if the fungal scent you get when it first rains. The flavor neat is earthy with a bit of pineapple. Where this run really shines is in a classic daiquiri. This rum takes a step back and allows for a blend that’s about as flawless as it gets. To every rum a purpose.
