The nose is definitely rum. The colour is dark, red, unusual. Back to the nose... Smokey. That's weird, in a rum. But it still smells like a delicious rum. Maybe not as sweet... Smells like a Zacapa. But with smoke. What's with that?

Then on the tongue. Immediately there's the classic Zacapa taste. Caramel, oak, slight vanilla. Smooth. Then the smoke shows up. So unusual in a rum. Still some bite, but ... it begs to be inhaled. Nose in the glass. I just can't help myself. The aroma, so inviting.
I could sit an inhale the wonderful aroma of this rum all night. Except..
No I can't. I need to keep sipping it.

Such a unique rum. If the opportunity arises, you must taste this. Not the best run I've ever tasted, but it really stands out, definitely worth tracking down.

Wow what a flavor profile it definitely has those chocolate notes I have come to expect from Zacapa and hints of cinnamon any smother and you would be drinking water this is some Great stuff my new favorite go to

No rum collection should be without this one again Wow

I haven't tried the 23, but my understanding is that this is similar but aged in 2 different heavily smoked barrels. It has a very complex set of flavors and aromas, and when I first tried it, I didn't like it much and I even thought it had some kind of a smoked tomato-y hint which I thought was offputting. However as I've tried it more over the past few weeks, I have found many interesting nuances, and the initial impression has given way to a real appreciation. It is a different rum from any I've tried, and that took some time to get used to. Now I look forward to it, it has a beautiful precise sweetness, a flare of smoke, easily and nicely balanced.

There is nothing really special in this rum, it is bit stronger then Zacapa 23.

I love the color, the smell and most importantly the taste. Fresh, smooth and smoky with just the right sweetness for my palette.

Refined and delicious with a sweet after taste with smokey tones. I'm a massive fan of the 23 but this trumps it.
If you can find one buy it.

I beleive its close to Etiqueta Negra! stronger then the regular Zacapa 43%, more oaky and burned smokey taste. Less sweet then regular 23 year Zacapa!

Better than the regular; more smoky and more burn. There are better rums out there for the same price

Wasn't sure if I should give this one a 7 or an 8. Wish they'd allow 'tweeners. Anyhow, the overall score of 7.5 is really just right. I chose 8 because it's a legitimately sophisticated rum worthy of the Zacapa name. I just think that, as the title I gave this review indicates, the compromise between classic sweet rum and bold whiskey-edged rum (of which I am quite fond, esp. the original Mount Gay XO) leaves me personally feeling like this rum does neither extremely well, though it's still pleasing enough. And being far more affordable than the Zacapa XO, it's definitely good VFM (another reason to lean 8-ward). Also, I would be remiss if I did not point out that I just opened the bottle now, for it could well be that in a few weeks or months, I'll be updating this review with a glowing report about how the flavors converged and developed into a heavenly blend. Here's hoping!
