Barbados | Aged | 40% ABV

Dos Maderas PX 5 + 5 rum is made from a combination of rums from Barbados and Guyana. It is unique becuase of its triple ageding process where for 5 initial years the rum is aged in the Carribean in oak casks. Next PX 5 + 5 is aged in Spain for 5 years in sherry casks, and lastly for 2 more years in even older sherry casks.

The Dos Maderas family of rums are produced by Bodegas Williams & Humbert, which is a well known Spanish winery founded by Sir Alexander Williams in the late 1800s. The region of Spain where the winery is located has a climate perfectly suited for wine and is known as Europe's wine cellar.

I normally don’t like dosed rums but this one is pretty subtle in that department. Tasting brings some apricots and walnuts that quickly become swallowed up by tobacco, toffee, raisin, figs, molasses and caramel but it all works extremely well together. There is dosage (added sugar) and it does longer on the pallate a while after drinking but it isn’t anything overbearing or overly sweet. All in all this is a solid rum, especially for after dinner sipping.

Sweet, but not sugary sweet. The Sherry cask is very prominent and adds sweetness to the molasses/brown sugar it feels like it already had. Some cherry and toffee. Dark & rich. Lingers nicely.

A little on the sweeter side however tasteful. It is stable taste. After like 3 bottles I tried it seems it keeps the same quality.

You can taste the sherry from the barrel where it aged.

I admit the bad experiences with sherry (from teenage years) influence my rating, but this rum is too sweet for me and there is too much sherry in the taste. The rum notes are completely drowned out by the sherry.

I'm not opposed to a sugar bomb, so I found this one quite interesting. Its got a LOT of flavor, more than any other rum I've ever tasted. But its also very sweet and rich, so if you prefer dry rums, this isn't for you. I usually try to compare a rum to something similar that I've had before, but I'm having a little trouble finding something similar. I want to say this might be like a more intense version of Zafra 21, but it has more raisin flavor. Since Zafra is one of my faves, this has worked its way onto the fave list as well, and I think I might like it a little better than Zafra actually.

One thing I tried that was interesting is I mixed 4 parts of this to 1 part Barbancourt 15 year, which is a fairly light rum, and the blend of the two took some of the intensity out of the DM, while adding a tiny agricole influence to the mix.

Ironically, this rum is from Barbados, which usually shuns the use of added sugar, but I guess its not strictly prohibited.

Dark brown in color. Bourbon, cherry and raisins on the nose. Cherry notes come right on my palate, followed by nice alcohol taste with vapors to nose. On after taste raisins, tobacco, dried fruits. Quite sweet, but not sticky sugared. Indeed, it is very distinct and gives me whisky wibes like Tamnavulin Sherry Cask Single Malt. Maybe not my favorites, but unique enough to recommend to a enthusiast.

Tasted at Laka Lono July 17, 2022
This "triple aged" rum is more than three times better than the "double aged" version, try to make that math work out!!
The progress made with the aging is indeed observable.
With aging, this rum picks up sweetness, vanilla and caramel flavors. It no longer tastes like yarn. Aging makes a significant difference, for the better.
Update: tasted at Laka Lono Kill Devil rum club, August 30 2023.
Appearance: amber with garnet highlights
Aroma: vanilla and caramel, this smells like a diabetic should stay away 😂
Flavor: I'm adding a bit of white pepper to what I taste, but there's also orange peel, vanilla and caramel.
This is a tasty rum!

Very nice and subtle notes of dried fruits. Full and complex but not overloaded with tastes. Oak comes through in the aftertaste, but does not stay on your tongue for too long. Beautiful to enjoy slowly!
