Dos Maderas PX 5 + 5 rum is made from a combination of rums from Barbados and Guyana. It is unique becuase of its triple ageding process where for 5 initial years the rum is aged in the Carribean in oak casks. Next PX 5 + 5 is aged in Spain for 5 years in sherry casks, and lastly for 2 more years in even older sherry casks.
The Dos Maderas family of rums are produced by Bodegas Williams & Humbert, which is a well known Spanish winery founded by Sir Alexander Williams in the late 1800s. The region of Spain where the winery is located has a climate perfectly suited for wine and is known as Europe's wine cellar.
I am big fan of rum, which is why, I do reviews on the site. I am, however, also very fond of PX-sherry, so it was only a matter of time before I got around to tasting this bad boy.
Nose: Big hit of sherry with a signature smell of raisins and wood
Taste: Classic sherry-tastes of figs, dates and raisins. A small burn with a long aftertaste.
Overall: This is a very nice rum with a big hit of sherry in both smell, taste and mouthfeel. It can be a bit to sweet for some, but if you love either rum or sherry, then this should be right up your alley.
This is the epitome of a thick sherry version of rum. Nice and sweet with a much heavier feel than most rums. Great peppery nose, and almost a walnut taste. The drawback to me is the finish, which is long and sticky - and seems to linger, but not in a great way.
Sugar: 36 gpl. This was one of my favorite rums with a rating of 9. Sweet and and very smooth with tastes of Port and Sherry. The rating of 9 is for the version shown in the left of the picture. It's now April 2015 and I just purchased a replacement bottle. The packaging has changed with the telltale sign being the removal of the printed gold ring around the top of the cylinder the bottle comes in. The foil is a darker brown and the label is different. Most important is that the taste is also quite different. The new release is not as smooth or sweet, and a pronounced oak taste with a smokey burn in the mouth. I have tried this several ways and I ended up dumping the bottle. For this reason, I would rate the new vintage a 5 and not buy it again. The point of this is like a fine wine, if you find a rum that you really like, buy several bottles from the same store as subsequent releases can disappoint you.
A different taste from the "usual" rums, but I like it a lot. The taste from the sherry casks does a really good job. I would love to taste the 10+5 some time. More of this please - certainly a re-buy.
Dos Maderas PX 5x5 Rum er en meget speciel rom, med en utrolig stor fad smag, men ellers er smag og duft udmærket. Hvis den skal genkøbet går der et stykke tid.
this rum is unusual - aged in PX casks, it's just way sweeter than a rum should be! If you're in the mood for sweet - it goes down a treat though. Very sherry, thick and sweet. I like it.
one on my most favourites, smooth and sweet :)....
I really enjoy this rum. On the nose there's sweet and fruity, on the palate is sherry and sugar, and the finish is smooth and flavorful. In my short list when I want to relax.
Excellent rum solera style. Notes of dry fruits and raisins. Excellent.
What a surprise! One of the best brown rums I ever tasted. Dark brown colour, smooth, full flavor, sweet character. Compares easily with a Qorum of double the price.
My bottle looks different, on the label it says: Dos Maderas Triple Aged Rum 5+5. Don't know if it just looks different or of it is a different rum.
Ok , great taste. .
I bought this while in the Caribbean and I'm happy that I did, although it isn't my favorite rum.
For the price my favorite one! I can understand this is not a taste for everybody, but I like it. Tastes a little bit fruity, sweet but I love it!
Very nice sweet and smooth rum.
A rum I would by again.
I like it best a bit chilled around 15 degrees and after it had a bit of time in the class.
Very nice and aromatic rum with brown carmely, plum and bit resin notes.
Ce ron andaloux est plein de surprises. Son finish en fûts de sherry lui octroie un côté très gourmand sans être trop sucré.
Sweet with a very subtle vanilla (I think). Smooth and with very little burn. Comparable to Doc Brown Dark just half the sweetness
Thanks to my bad experience with Papas Pilar rums, I have stayed away from rums aged in sherry casks. So I had a WTF moment and this rum was only $40, so I took my chances. When I got home, I also had no idea that it has 36 gpl of added sugar, which qualifies it as a sugar bomb. However, since I like it better than my current top sugar bomb (DRE), this now qualifies this one with a rating of 7. Since it is so hard for me to find, I doubt that I will go hunting for it again.
Oh yes, what about the flavors? Despite having the last 5 years aged in sherry barrels in Spain, the sherry flavors are quite subdued and not in your face. It somehow manages to still taste like a rum, because the type of sherry aging is what counts. Very well done, but I have been staying clear from heavily sugared rums. They don't hold their flavors in the bottle and they are bad for one's health.
Dark, smooth, tasty. Nice way to end a cold evening.
A bit harsh at the beginning, after very nice, smooth aftertaste with caramel, vanilla, chocolate, sweet, complex. Delicius; as well as world of sherry.
Chuťově bomba jemný uvolňující dojem SUPER požitek do skupiny sladších rumů na pomalé popíjení když mají muži své dny jasná volba !
There are some wonderful rums out there, mostly at higher price points, but time and time again I come back to the magnificent rum. This is the rum I get out for my mates who prefer scotch - and nearly all absolutely love it.
Straight or with a single ice cube, this rum is a perfect blend of smooth caramel with enough complexity and grunt to let you really enjoy it.
Would recommend to those starting out and more experienced rum drinkers alike.
A sweet rum with a balanced amount of oak. Smells of leather and cinnamon. Taste of sweet brown sugar with fruit, faintly butterscotch and nuts. The perfect amount of oak to tame the finish. I don’t find that it has any of the burn that others describe. Definitely a thumbs up at this price.
